Hi Guys

Just found this forum and already got some good tips here so thanks for that.

I bought a cheap 99 discovery TD5 auto in the last few days. It has a few problems which i knew about. I was told the auto box had a slight leak, but since i got it i parked it in the drive and have found no oil on driveway. what i did discover though is that after about 5 minutes of driving the red transmission temperature warning light is coming on. Sometimes it goes off again for about 30 seconds and then comes on again. Auto box itself feels fine though. changing gears fine all the time.

Guess I'm wondering if it could be something as simple as a faulty sensor - or whether there's no obvious oil leak as all the oil has leaked out already :D

vehicle is going to a land rover specialist at end of week about 18 miles away and wondering what I can do myself to try to make sure it gets there without blowing up the gearbox.

Thanks for all the info so far. It's my first Land Rover since I had a Freelander briefly many moons ago.

hi
didn't get underneath yet as i have no way under where i am. might just have to take it to local garage just to check gearbox oil level before i go to specialist.
thanks

Hi Pat, I have a TDi auto not a TD5 but all the auto-box cars I've ever owned are the same in this respect - you will find another dipstick in the engine bay, this is for the auto box (coloured red/brown ).

There is a specific procedure to be followed when checking the oil level in the 'box - first start the engine ('box in Park), then select all the way back to first (no. 1) and then back again to Park, then check the level on the dipstick.

Also, the oil should look red in colour. If it's brown and if it smells of burning it needs changing imediately.

the temp sensor is on the drivers side of the oil cooler below the intercooler justs disconect the plug as the sensor could be faulty and td5 do not have dipsticks just get underneth and the level plug is on the front of the sump and it needs to be checked with engine running in park.

Thanks guys

I will give it a good check out before I do anything.

Looking forward to getting it back to A1.

Pat,
Where abouts are you in the SW? There are a couple of good indies around and it might be worth a chat with them, I can give you the numbers if you want. I am in Clare / Limerick area.

I have owned some later auto cars and have found they do not have a dipstick at all.
