Freelander 1 Auto box stuck in 1st for a few hundred yards.

There's a table int rave disk which shows which shift solenoids are active or not for each gear. The difference between two gears tells you what changes. 1>2 A and C change, 2>3 A change only, 5>4 A only... etc

Well it's been a while since this fault has sufaced, but it's done so with a vengeance.
The box stuck in 1st again this morning, at a roundabout, after a 20 mile 70Mph journey. It went into first as I came to a halt. I pulled away and it just stayed stuck in 1st. I pulled over ASAP, accidentally selecting P before I'd completely stopped:oops:. There was a big bang as the parking pawl went in:eek:, but thankfully nothing more serious.

As for the box fault. I cycled the ignition, which seemed to get the box changing up again, however at the next junction, the same thing happened. This time 1st went in with a bang, the HDC warning light came on and F4 started flashing on the dash. Oddly the box seemed to work just fine. I decided to use Command Shift for the rest of the journey, simply to prevent the TCM from selecting 1st. I then decided to read the TCMs using my I930 and my BT dongle connected to the Torque app. The I930 won't connect to the TCM, but did show the CAN is missing, when I read the ABS ECU.

Interestingly Torque pulled up 3 codes, presumably from the engine ECU.

So if anyone has any ideas where I should be looking for this. I've checked the basics, but not the ABS ECU connections or the Ipack connections, which I'll do later today.

Things to note are. This fault only seems to appear after a period of high speed driving. And it also seems to only happen after a good few miles. It's never come to light on my 10 miles daily commute, but that's mostly slow to medium speed, A and B roads, although 1st is used quite frequently on the route I take.
 
Bit out of my depth, but assume that there are at least 2 parts to this. 1. Ecu tells auto when to change and auto acts on the command? Could it be connections between the 2? What is the Ipack please? My i930 won't read autobox either although icarsoft told me it would with the latest update which I have not yet downloaded. Glad you didn't bust it with Park when rolling! Need to find out how the gear range is determined. Your fault list suggests sensor problems?? Will read up a bit more about how it all works.

I believe the engine ECU tells the TCM when to change gear, the TCM then actually does the solenoid powering in response.
Could it be connections between the 2?
Very possible, this might be the CAN failure at the ABS ECU.

I Pack is the dashboard ECU, which is the connection point for all ECUs on the CAN network.

I didn't know there was an I930 update, which will fix this non connection with the TCM. I'll update mine ASAP.

So am I. Luckily I was basically stopped, just not quite. I got a bit excited by the whole thing, as I'd not seen the fault since last year.

Possibly. The first fault listed is due to the selector not quite lining up with the detent on the lever. I've noticed the lever halfway between D and 4 on a couple of occasions. This puts the HDC fault light on, and flashes F4 on the LCD. Cycling the ignition cured this, providing the lever is located in the correct position.

The 2nd and 3rd out of range is an odd one. The way I see it is the engine ECU is expecting the box to be in the gear it requested, but for some reason the box remains in 1st. I'm just guessing here, but that's the way I see it.

Investigation into the this will continue.

I updated my I930 yesterday, to the latest software version. Guess what, it still doesn't connect when I want to pull the codes, but strangely does show some live box data, but not all data. It's all a bit strange, but also very annoying.

Well. This morning the fault manifested itself on my way to work. It's been absolutely fantastic for 2 weeks, then bang, it all goes wrong. So I'm driving along at 30 in D, decided to slip the box onto 4th so to prevent it selecting 5th, which I normally do at this point in the trip. All of a sudden the box selected 1st and I'm slowing down under engine braking, which isn't convenient when I'm accelerating up from 30. After a few seconds there was a thump as the box shifted up to 4th, and the F4 started flashing on the LCD, along with the HDC! light. The box remained in 4th for the remaining 3 miles of the journey. I popped into Co-op for some lunch, setting of for the final mile of my journey. The box stuck in first once again, before thumping into 4th again, giving the same F4/HDC! on the display. When I got to where I park, I thought I'd read the codes with my I930. As usual, it refused to read the TCM codes but it reads the build information on the TCM.:confused:. Next I checked the EDC, which shows no codes, and the ABS ECU, which showed 'C1151 CAN Gearbox data failure'.

So. Where do I go from here. I'm going to be parking it up for until the weekend. Then I'm going to go through the solenoid resistances again. Other than that, without being able to read the TCM, I'm stuck. :mad:
 
A while ago you mentioned the gear lever position needed the cable adjusted as the dash went from D to 4 without touching it. Have you adjusted this yet?

Are you running a synergy box or similar power mod?

The detent that holds the gear lever in position, doesn't lock as hard as it should (worn I think). So it's easy to miss D and get the lever stuck between D and 4. If this happens, the box works just fine, although it shows F4 and the HDC! light comes on.
Have you adjusted this yet?
No, as the cable adjustment appears correct. It's difficult to determine, but D and 2 on the lever do correspond to the limit of motion on the gearbox selector.

Are you running a synergy box or similar power mod?
Yes. I've got a Synergy, which is currently set to minimum power boost, I have it for the MAF compensation mainly.

I would change out ya 3 shift solinoids if it were mine..and just for good measure the 3 duty ones...in fact do them all saves you having to rebolt all those trans oil pan bolts again....

It's quite an easy job.

If it's not those is start looking at the speed sensors.

Oddly it behaved impeccably on the way home.

All the solenoids measured within spec, and to be honest I'm not prepared to sling £200 worth of solenoids at it on the off-chance it might or might not fix the issue.

On the plus side, I have found Some "evidence" of tampering with the EDC to box harness. There's an area that's hidden from view, which has been rapped in some form of tape. So I'm thinking that maybe there's a break in the wiring at that point.

I'm also getting a CAN failure between the TCM and ABS ECU. So that's going to need investigation too.
