well story is gearbox lost drive in all forward gears so emmotts new gearbox after all the bad weather finally got it fitted new filter and oil aswell now no low box not even beeping or showing on dash board put it in reverse not moving drive seems ok ish have spoken to joe at emmots explained everything i did fitting it said id done everything right and seems to think it cud be gearbox ecu anybody else had this problem joe is very helpfull person got to ring him tomas with the numbers of my old gearbox ecu !!!!!!!!!!!

The gearbox high low range motor may need moving a little to bring it into the range of the new box shaft, its like a gloryfied wiper motor with two park positions, 1 high 2 low, trouble is it needs removing and a multimeter on it to find the proper pos to the electric on the ecu.. hope this helps ya.

gear box is still physically put into rev and drive thru cable connected to stick if wont rev even though moving gear stick as may not be lined up with notches on consol you have fault with gear box ecu works gear change(when to change up or down) not basics,is all wiring connected or is low proplem something that was there before either t/box ecu next to gear box ecu or motor on t/box

so if ecu was knackered wud this stop the car reversing working in forward gears no faults on dashboard but no high or low either

Not sure. It should have a limp mode that I would expect it to engage (along with the Gearbox Fault message). This shouldn't affect Reverse though. You could try checking the connections to the gearbox ECU. It's under the passenger seat, I think.

There is also a transfer box ECU too.

Are you positive that all the electrical connections to the gearbox are correctly installed?

update selector adjusted correctly transfer box was working before being removed.
phone joe at emmotts gave him ecu tranmission ecu number only to find out the ecu that was fitted to my car was 99-2001 model ecu so i descibed under the bonnet to joe he said looks like at some stage ov its life its had engine gearbox and wiring loom + ecus fitted to it out ov a newer model and the gearbox he supplied me was for a 98 same as the car so hes going to send me ecu to match gearbox all confusing but he knows his stuff and im slowly learning just hope it works

Eh? As far as I know there is no difference in the gearboxes. I'm assuming yours is a petrol here. The gearbox ECU may be different to cope with the later THOR engine ECU but in that case I wouldn't expect a GEMS gearbox ECU to work with a THOR engine ECU...

Confusing.

So to reiterate, you have no reverse gear, all other gears work ok, but your transfer box doesn't work at all?

Have you checked Ashcroft's FAQ? I vaguely remember seeing something about having no reverse gear.

I suspect the transfer box issue is unrelated to the gearbox itself and more likely to be something not connected correctly.

firstly mines 2.5 td auto i fitted replacement box myself which i purchased from emmotts ov clone to which i have heard all praise for emmotts and havin spoken to joe he knows his stuff hes trying really hard to help me the car does sound like its had a bit off past history to which i was unaware ov but i will keep going till it runs again
the transfer box dead not sure y was workining when it was removed forward gears seems ok just reverse
i did jump start the car cos battery was flat and have been told might not have helped things spiking trasmission ecu which cud be y transfer box not working

it is put in to reverse by cable not ecu ,ecu replaces govenor for gear changes,if it wont reverse fault in gear box ,transfer box has nothing to do with it ,past history is red herring gear boxes are same whatever system is used mechanically, gearbox will have to come out

well aint taking gearbox out again in this weather gunna try ecu 1st and live in hope in the mean time ill keep using freelander till weather improves

If the linkages are all correct and all forward gears work, main reason for no reverse would be failed reverse one way clutch. Box out i am afraid.

it does sound like box out job but trying wot joe saying at emmotts as i purchased box from him and he seems very genuine helpfull bloke and joe says the box was a good 1 he sold me he is sending me an ecu to try next if that dosent work have to see wot he advises next .
