hello

just want to pick a few brains if i can

just brought the misses a td4 auto on a 2003 reg to stop her stealing mine lol

car has covered 73000 miles with papers to show, problem is when driving forward the wheels lock up, i removed the prop and still the same if i drive really slow it doesnt lock up.
in reverse it doesnt lock only if i try and pick up any speed????

i have felt ird units that have worn before and feel like a rumble when turning it by hand this doesnt feel like that so do you think its the auto box or the ird??? is there a way of testing the auto box ????

cheers

When yer ses wheels lock up, are you driving at say 4 mph and it's as if someone has wedged a crow bar in the engine to stop the engine turning?

I think it's ird too. Cogs broke'd inside. He could try moving it whilst in neutral to see if it still happens. That would rule out auto. Or disconnect prop and try again.

diff or torque convertor would be my guesses.
if it was ird, it would show signs at all speeds with or without prop.

and i've never heard of one locking up, just jumping and banging

hello yes it just stops with a clunk, but i'd say faster prob about 8/10 if really slow dont seem to lock

prop is off if i tahe the shaft out the ird will i be able to tell from the cog on that??

I was thinking there was something loose like a tooth in the ird. Just a guess. I was thinking it only happened at a certain speed due to the speed of the cogs. They need to get to be a certain speed to be able to flick the loose tooth up to allow it to jam. This is a difficult fault to guess. Hence why we're not too sure.

If it were me I'd lift both front wheels and spin one fast by hand. See what happens. Then lift both side wheels and see what happens. Then same for other side. Then same for rear. With props off you will get different results. See if it suddenly stops at any time. Feel for slack too as you start tp turn wheels. Some won't see the point in this as it may not show the fault, but it's free to try.
