I want some better sounds in my Disco 1. I’ve got the front speakers upgraded with some Alpines which fit and sound much better than original.

I’d like to put some 6x9s in the back but none of them seem to fit in the pillars due to depth, or they’ll foul the seats when unfolded. Has anyone tried 6x9s in the rear door? Think this would be pretty easy to do once you’ve made the holes?

Also I have the original tape head unit still in, for the look and because I like the remote buttons working. Has anyone upgraded their head unit with the buttons still working?

I did a stereo upgrade many years ago with 3 way pioneer speakers, two in the front doors
Two in the headlining facing the rear passengers and two in the back in the D post
Also an Amp and six disc CD changer under the passenger seat with remote,

It all depends on the aftermarket head unit u choose, but I doubt that there’s an interface lead that’s suitable fro the D 1 dash switches, but I’ve never wished to find out.
My Pioneer head unit that have isn’t compatible with the switches, but I’ve never found it an issue, perhaps it’s because my arms are long enough to reach the head unit buttons.
As for the rear loudspeakers, why not stay with something similar to the front two, unless u intend fitting an amplifier to drive the the rears.

There was a kit available to allow you to use the butttons, at least there was 6 years ago, but not something I ever really felt the need of.

Cheers

Ah that lead converter thing looks ideal. Was ideally after something with more bass in the back, hence the 6x9s, plus I have a couple of pairs lying around.

Hadn’t thought of putting speakers in the roof- interesting idea!

If you wanted more base then you could fit a base unit in the rear door pocket,
I have a L reg discovery donor car that has one fitted,
Can take a pic of it tomorrow if you want?

U will only get the bass frequency that the head unit provides, the same with volume so the normal loudspeakers will give u that.
So why not fit a 10” sub woofer in its box and stand it on the boot floor, that something I’ve done with a 200watt amp installed under the front passenger seat, so much better than the bass unit that’s fitted in my rear door as a standard fitment.
If I ever need boot space, which is not often then I just unplug the sub and switch back the supply to the door unit. But u can always try a compact active ‘under seat’ sub.

Unless there's enough air space behind the 6X9 for the bass to be produced, you'll be in the same situation, with large holes in the interior.

As suggested. Just fit a sub to the set up you have, and leave it at that.;)
