Howdie!

i have a 200tdi onto an lt77 gearbox and am a little confused about which oil to use...

the haynes has "Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)" printed in it and then somebody's crossed out the (ATF) but and put MTF instead... this is in a brand new manual sealed in plastic so it was obviously done before it was shipped out

have had a look around various posts on this subject and mostly people seem to be using ATF, which i always have done myself (was a recon box from ashdown 2 years ago, but developed a crunch - synchromesh i think just after the 12 month warranty ran out!), however i've seen some posts suggesting MTF is the better option

Judging by the alteration of my manual did somebody change their mind at land rover?!

and what difference does it make anyway? could using ATF instead of MTF be the reason my synchromesh is on its way out!?

Bonjouno. yeh it seems that ATF is recomended i dont know why because i think that it is a bit to thin myself. Im not sure if it has to be thin because of the internal oil pump inside the gearbox but i fix john deere equipment for a living and i use their hy-guard j20c hydraulic and transmission oil in both my td5 90 and my dads 200tdi 90 and it works a treat and is a bit thicker than ATF but not as thick as gear oil and it has a good service life as it can do 1500hrs of work inside a tractor before it needs changing but i dont know what to suggest but i would put something a bit thicker than ATF in there if it was me. I herd some one say that the reason ATF is used is because normal ep90 gear oil is to thick and makes it hard to change gears when cold but this could be a load of rubbish as i dont know any one that has put gear oil in there.

Hi there, how easy would it be for a novice to change all the oils on his 200tdi? I have change engine oil before on my

previous motors and done bits of mechanical work, speedo cables etc... Today i was quoted £170 to change all the oils

on my defender 90, but the guy said it would just be a top up if certain oils didnt need changing. I purchased the landy

4 days ago and just wanted to do for peace of mind after reading a couple of horror stories on landyzone. The guy at

the garage said the oil would cost around £100 + £70 labour? Is it worth the time and effort or should i go to the local landy garage?

Any advice would be greatly apprecciated.

Easy, schoolchild could do it, just get enough of all the right types of oil, the right tools, dump it all and fill it up with all the right oils. Well worth it in a LR - keeps things going well.

Indeed it is a very simple and worthwhile job it also makes it much easier and faster if you drive your landy about till its up to operation temperature, it makes the gear oil in the transfer box and axles a little bit thiner so it drains out faster and much better. not trying to teach any 1 how to suck eggs but it does make a difference.

Hi Mate, I totally agree with Discomania, the Difflock Evolution 1 oil is excellent. I have the LT77 5 speed box in my 1989 110. When i had the landy, 2nd gear was always tricky first thing and i took my time going through the gears. Then I saw the Difflock oil and put that in instead of the ATF, and honestly the gearbox is excellent, smooth, change gear quicker and no problems at all with 2nd gear, a tremendous difference. I was that impressed now use all their oils, in engine, transfer box and diffs, ok it`s not cheap, but I know it makes a difference so i`m prepared to pay the extra. Hope that helps.
