are defenders any good?

im relatively new to the offroadin scene and havent encountered any lanes like that in cambridge ha its abit flat round here,
what should of he of done then ?
 
Yeah the first thing I thought was Low Ratio.

It seemed as though he was riding the clutch as well.
 
he should have gone slow and steady and when he did go wrong he should have put it in reverse and come back down the slope in a controlled way using the gears. if his foot slips off the brake pedal it would not have looked good!! it was booting it and losing all grip which was the worse bit!!

he had most likely already snapped the front half shafts and CV joints
