are all multi function steering wheels the same??

Hi ive been upgrading a few bits on my 97 HSE this week, one of which was a wood and leather steering wheel. Now the buttons on the wheel dont do what they should to the radio!! They work but no volume control, that now changes the cd track, i have a mute that i didnt before, and the mode buttons change the radio station!! The radio was away for repair when i fitted the wheel so couldnt check it, now ive put the serviced (by clarion) radio back its all to cock! The cruise control works fine though, well it did yesterday when i drove it last minus the radio. Guess ill have to try the old wheel again first. Anyone know if newer model wheels are wired different??
