as the title says really, does anyone fancy driving my 300, and telling me if its underpowered or not? its the first one ive had, and im convinced its lacking pull big time, ive done the searches on here, and carried out pretty much all of the work that was suggested (intercooler flush, manifold flush, fuel and air filter, sedimenter, checked boost pipes, pipe between pump and turbo etc) and i still think its poor. a mates just bought one and when driving that i can hear the turbo spool, and feel it coming on boost. not mine though. the turbo spool can just about be heard but no obvious boost. EGR is blanked and its de-catted. im running 235/75/16 insa turbos, with a 2" lift, and my mates is standard so thats the only difference really. both of ours are 96 plates with normal fuel pumps too.
i think i just need someone indepedant to say "stop bloody moaning, its fine" or "yes J, it is a bit down on power, lets try sort it out":crazy:

im in wrexham north wales. did all the intercooler yesterday, covered the yard in black jizer, manifold was all gummed up, but still no better. turbo spins fine, with no play in the shaft. just about tearin my hair out now. im not expecting it to pull like a wagon, but as i said, im not convinved its right. does anyone else feel their turbo coming in?

Yeah, mine does .. ;)

Have you checked the hoses for splits and that they aren't gone soft? Watch as someone or you rev it up and even at a standstill if the turbo inlet hoses bulge a lot then replacement might be necessary.

The hoses can also delaminate inside, so they all look OK, but are blocking the inlet .. worth checking. ;)

had them all off yesterday, they are soft as sh1t but they're all in one piece, and if squashing them and revving it, i can feel it blowing, but im not sure if its boosting enough and also at the right time. would the hoses stil look ok inside and out, even if they are fooked?

They can look nearly new and be ****e. If they are as soft as you say, buy some new ones .. ;)

Mind, that's easy for me to say. For a quick test, try covering them with electrical tape, tightly woven, to try and stop them expanding too much, then rev the engine and see the difference, take it for a quick drive .. this'll at least give you an idea if it is this or something more costly .. ;)

Here's another one for you , when was the exhaust last changed as the bigger of the silencers nearest the manifold can clog up with tarry sorta stuff real bad , a lot of the guys round my way are removing that silencer and gettin' a section of pipe made up to replace it and have had good results , bit more noisy but acceleration is well improved .

it does almost feel like a breathing problem somehwhere, when i took the cat off it was quite sooty. i happened to be standing behind another 300 at a pay and play day last weekend and i could hear his turbo whistling nicely even from his exhaust! not a hope in ****e mines that clear and free to be able to make a purr like that.
its better now having done bits and piecs than when i bought it. when i had it, it struggled to pull its own weight, let lone get a loaded trailer behind it. its no longer that bad. maybe its just me being fussy and expecting torque thats never gona happen. i started to settle with it until i drove my mates. that was the point where i knew the ol girl was unpowered. thanks for the continued help guys anyway, keep the suggestions coming if poss!!

A quick couple of thoughts:

1. When driving on the open road, in third gear, what will she rev to? 3000, 3500, 4000, 4500? Anything less than 4000rpm indicates a problem and it's very often fuel delivery.

2. Have you checked/changed the fuel lift pump? They cost about £17+vat from Paddocks - might be worth a try?

Cheers
Dave

gave it thrashing down the bypass today, revs perfectly in any gear, no smoke at all from it. to be honest it does seem a bit better so i think ill leave it until im stuck for something to do when i finish a night shift now. going to try and stop throwing time and money at it as it performs flawlessly off road which is what i bought it for really. (wise words of ones dad).

i changed the thermostat on mine today an it drives like a new car!
does the temp on yours reach about half way and stay there or does it take hours to reach temp? then drop when you ease off the gas for a while?

just a thought!

Hey bigL
In the search for that elusive lil bit more lol

1. Did this today im sure it would have made 4500 but @ aboot 4300 it sounded and felt like it wanted to blow to bits! So changed up, did have missus and kids on board as well!

2. My manual fuellift ie the lil lever has never worked! But landy seems to be ok, My point is should i have it out and check it or not? She seems to be fine other than that....
Even after removing the fuel tank it bled through on what was left in the injector pump, (maybe i was lucky?)but thats by the by

an update on this for those that might be able to help.. ive now got 2 friends with 300tdi discos, and they both knock spots off this one of mine. brought the latest one back from north york on saturday, an she sat at a happy 75/80 behind my v6 golf all the way home. no chance mine could reach that speed, its flat out at 65! now im not after a sports car, but it needs sorting now. ive covered eveything in my checks bar the timing so far, but mine doest have the throttle response of the other 2, and the turbo spools later in the rev range. they are changing gears happily at just over 2k, whereas im over 3k for the same road speed. they both sit at just over 2.5k doin 70mph, and when mine gets close to that, its over 3k (according to my rev counter). g/box is all original. ive had the top off my fuel pump, and moved the diaphram pop mark to 4 o'clock which is where the diaphram sits in the new addition to the fleet. and it was awfull. low box to get up my drive awful. ive now moved it round to roughly 10 o'clock and she goes well, but still not the same throttle response as the mates, and still revving higher at the same road speeds. sorry to go on but its stressing me out now. does this ring any bells for anyone? am i barkng up the wrong tree? my only concern is, that by ****ing about with the pump, im hiding another problem.
please please please landyzone, bring me out my little stress bubble!!

forgot to mention, iv rigged up a boost gauge, and its boosting fine. max boost at 3k on the clocks, but still seems lke its spooling later than the other 2 trucks.

James.

If she's revving to that amount I would have thought the you're getting enough fuel through, but to be honest at £17 or so, why not just change it.

I can't remember if you said you'd changed fuel & air filters? Cleaned the sedimenter?

All filters lubes done (jan)! Sedimenter done when i put new boot floor in just before xmass!
Give it a while and see before the fuel pump, its gonna be water pump! Noticed a telltale trickle of water under pulley when i was under it at the weekend!
