Just lately when driving my RRc 300TDi it is blowing cold air when the temp guage is half way then suddenley it goes warm, but this is after i have been driving a while and soon as i stop then get back in its cold again.I checked to see if there is water in the header tank and its ok but when the engine is running it does not seem to be circulating round the engine and the top hose seems empty when I squeeze it.Could it be the water pump(as it was changed only 3 months ago)or thermostat or something more sinister.Any help apreciated.
Happy Christmas to you all and may you and your cars have a trouble free new year.....
Just to to add whilst driving down the motorway only a few miles the temp gauge went right into the red and soon as i pulled off the motorway it dropped to normal.

He said there is still coolant in the header tank so possibly not the head gasket. I would suspect the water pump. Do you have any white smoke smoke coming out when you start in the mornings??

-Wills :)

Must learn to read posts more carefully! Yes, water pump worth having a look at but he did say it had been changed recently although we don't know if it was a new one or a 'good' s/h one.

I would sniff test it without question, it's an extremely quick and very accurate way of testing for combustion leaks.

No white smoke and water pump was a new one 3 months ago.I thought water pump was noisey turned out to be fan cowl after all that !This is really doing my head in, it is blowing hot air some of the time then its not and temp guage is constant in the middle but to be fair it had lost some water but not all when I checked yesterday.

do you have leaky heater matrix o-rings, or rusted metal pipes because i had that the other day, and it nearly overheated! my heater had a book on it until i changed these pipes, now its fine again, so might be connected somehow.. dont know if your 300tdi will have the same pipes, but its gotta be worth a look anyway!

my leaky pipe was the one above the left hand side rocker cover that feeds the heater matrix. (4.0 V8). was told that they are a common fault too..

I had a very similar experience recently and it turned out to be HGF. make 100% sure the air is out of the system and if more is gettin in it could be from the combustion chambers. Is the Ex bottle under a lot of pressure?

Thanks curly will give that a look.I want it to be anything except the head gasket.

i just read your first post again properly and it sounds like you have an air lock. i was told that if the air bubble is by the sensor, it wont show up the temperature, even if it is steam. but then as soon as the water comes back, it will boil as it hits the air bubble.
make sure you dont have any air leaks!

I would explore the possibility of having trapped air first. Fill up the rad and then the thermostat housing. Run for a while and then put more in through the housing (once cooled). If you are consistently getting air and having to bleed out then you have to ask wheres it coming from. Don't be disheartened even if it does look like a head gasket. Theres plenty of help and advice out there and step by step instructions even. Its not a difficult job, nor is it expensive. I just did it for about £150 (not counting radiator and water pump replacements) Including head gasket, new bolts, head inspection and test and skim. Now its good as new.

Happy Christmas!

Thanks I will try that but maybe not today as I will be in trouble with the missus(christmas day and all that) I will let you know how I get on and obviously ask for more help. Thanks again happy christmas to you all...

Just an update I have found a water leak dripping down the block sort of just behind the alternator as you look from the side. I cannot make out if its the front or the side of the block.I have filled it with water as it has lost a little but not all since it was last used on sunday and it runs great heater working temp ok.Could anybody tell me what is in that area that could leak.?

tis the "p" gasket located behind the front engine cover, remove alternator, power steering pump, water pump and then front cover (mine went before xmas tuk me 1.5 hour to do)

if it wur hg failure you wud hav no heater (as Revjames), mine was exactly the same just a small water loss over a period of time only showed itself properly when i drained the system and put the correct mix of anti freeze in.

Yes but beware, methinks that neglecting to maintain the water level due to P gasket failure and resulting overheat led to HG probs so my advice is attend to it promptly, dont trust the temp gauge either!

Best of British!
