Any major things wrong with TDV8 L322?

Hi all.
My 2000 P38 4.6 V8 has just died, and I'm looking at an L322 TDV8 2007/8 to replace it. I've read a lot on here (using the search!) about general things to look out for, but most advice seems to point towards issues earlier than the cars I'm looking at - particularly gearbox issues on the TDV6.

Am I not finding much because they are suddenly a reliable dream car?? Or am I missing something?

What should I be looking out for? I'm looking at cars with about 70-80k on the clock.

Anything after 2006 seems to have less problems than the early versions. But having said that anything can have problems if not looked after. A lot of P38s suffered because they were expensive to maintain, so people ran them into the ground without proper maintenance and service. The L322 is on a different level of cost to maintain, far more expensive. So expect a lot of crap to be around in the future due to neglect and scrimping on repairs.

Thanks for the quick response Wammers. I eternally regret not doing enough research before I bought my P38. I'm hoping not to make the same mistake again...

I don't mind paying to maintain a car properly, I tend to keep my cars for 6-7 years so aim to look after them, but my P38 took the ****!!
 
The TDV8 is not without Gearbox issues...but much less so than the early L322's with the ZF5 and GM5 boxes...

The TDV8's do tend to eat Alternators and Turbos from what I can garner, but aslong as maintenance and regular oil changes are done to keep the Turbo Bearings in good order, they can be fairly reliable...

Reported Frequency of doom is 60-80K miles....

Hate to point you to another forum, but fullfatrr.com - Index are pretty clued up on the Later L322 models and their 'issues'....
 
From what I can gather Landrover quote 40 hrs to change turbo its an engine out job so indies prob do it in 10hrs so still expensive and the main reason they fail apparently is not allowing the cool down period after a motorway run - the oil line is close to exhaust and if left stationary near the exhaust carbonises and ends up blocking the feed - so depends on how the previous owner behaved

Tdv8 turbos are done inbody and takes around 15 to 20 hours!!!!
Gearboxs are pretty good (dont see to many in with faults)
Alternators see alot and they genrally take the battery with them
Rear top and bottom rose joints go
Osr brake pipe over the strut area tend to corrode well
Front lower arm ball joints
If it has active cornering system fitted the wires chaff on the front struts (wiring kit available)
Rear shock absorbers tend to weap (only visble when fully extended)

Other than that they are fairly realibale if serviced and maintained correctly
 
they all fail regardless common fault below is a disco but same principle:eek:it was at a friends having turbos changed if you look carefully you can see blue string securing the downpipe on one bank,easier to remove the body totally to gain access

I have a Range Rover Sept 2006, had it from new & now done 212000 miles. Recon auto gearbox fitted at 165000. Rear suspension had a bit done to it nothing too drastic, front air bag went which are more expensive than a rear one & the pre-heater gave up which has just cost me £900 to replace. Main issue is the electronics, you need to find yourself a whizz kid to problem solve, I found mine at Bush Engineering at Nyewood near Petersfield, Hants. All in all I find it very reliable& will always get you home & a joy to drive. I do use mine alot which I think keeps the electronics warm & dry.
