I may or may not be looking for a new deepender in the near future, when i say new i don't mean a brand spanker but newer than the one I've got now.

The 110 is now about 16 years old and starting to look it unfortunately, I can foresee alot of patching required to the chassis soon, it's already started on the dumb iron's, and at some point soon the rear cross member may need replacing.

The doors are slowly succumbing to corrosion and need replacing and due to the fact that it's unlikely that I'll be able to find second hand doors that all match colourwise, they'll probably need repainting.

Having had a quick look at the market, it's not unfeasible to suggest I may go for a td5 but I'm not convinced on that one yet, I really like the 90's but realistically a 110 would be better, more room for the kids and we also tend to holiday in this country , so it's nice to throw a load of stuff in the back without it encroaching on the kids space.

Am i being realistic or should I spend the cash on putting what I've got right or am I just throwing good money after bad?

When did they increase the road tax on 4x4s?
I wouldn't buy one with the pricey road tax.
How much for a galvanized chassis to be put on the one you've got?

I'd be looking at something with a pre increase rfl if possible.

And as far as a galvy chassis on my existing landy, well I had given it some thought, you're looking at about a grand for the chassis, God knows how much it's gonna cost to fit:confused2:

And to add to my previous list the power steering pump is on it's way out and the bulkhead has started to rot on the top nearside corner.:(

Personally, the way they have 'gone' in the last ten years, and the way the Gov't is effing about with the regs, I'd be inclined to stick with the old'n until at LEAST the next government! whether just running it into the ground or patching & plating it by and by.
And THEN, my personal inclination would be to go find a £400 Mondeo estate or something to get me by, pull the 110 off the road, get a new galv chassis for it, and rebuild it onto that platform, reconditioning each assembly as I went... and have an essentially brand new, 20+year life car in reward for it...
Depends on whether you have the space / time / money / mechanical dexterity /understanding of nearest & dearest / inclination though.
Paying some-one else to do the work, is just exhorbitantly undoable, most of the time.
But check out the chassis option, they can be 'done' reasonably ecconomically; some-one that knows what they are about can litterally 'slide' a new chassis under the body without completely taking it apart, and do the job in about three days.
BUT, go over teh chassis carefully to find out of it REALLY needs that much work to begin with. They tend to go at the rear X-member and out-riggers, if hard used, the radius arm brackets, and what can look like bad rot can be little more than surface rust where the paints started to come away, rather than the rot actually permiating through from inside the box section.
On a car of yours age, that tends to only occur if its been used for dipping dingies in the sea, or been sat around in the amoniacal emmissions found in a farm-yard.
Chances are, it COULD be scrubbed up with a little bit of wire-brushing and chassis black, and a few plates or members cut in where needed, and teh cosmetics tackled likewise.... and given a coat of nice shiney paint at the end, you'd probably get quite a good price for it, rather than sold as is, looking a bit 'scabby'......

Superb post Teflon, I shall definitely be taking some of your advice onboard.

Not sure if I could go for having the car off the road for too long but I'm certainly going to recheck the chassis again and also ask for an independant evaluation, ( me mate down the road )

Meanwhile I'll see if I can take some pics ( this is where I could do with Buster and his expertise ) and post them up here, see what you think.

Once again cheers.

My case islke this. My 90 110 had rot n the rear of chassis, outriggers and a few other places. It was definitely repairable, however I use it for some heavy towing and I didn't fancy the idea of 3 tons of trailer hanging off one of the flimsy replacement cross members that are available, so decided to go for a new chassis. I'm using a cheap and cheerful disco as a replacement in the meantime so can still do everything the 110 could. I shopped around for a chassis and could have bought a new un-galvanised td5 job which would have needed minor mods for not very much off ebay. In the end I got a new, galvanised one for about half what they cost from richards or marslands. While I'm at it 'm going to fit a tdi engine and refurbish as I go along as teflon suggested. It will have cost me a fair bit in the end but I will have a spot on landy that I know every inch of that should go another 20 years without any major spending required.

Yes I agree wholeheartedly, I would love to stick a galvy chassis under it and like you say refurbish as I go along and end up with a knob on landy for a fair few years yet, BUT the only facilities that I can get my hands on are my mates down the road, ( His garage has got a pit and He's got shed loads of tools, He actually works at Royces ) unfortunately He's always got some project on at regular intervals and I don't think He'd appreciate my landy stuck in there for a couple of weeks or more, plus I'm not quite as handy as I would like to be. So I would probably end up leaving it with him to sort and God knows how long that would take.

It's something I'm going to have to think long and hard about and weigh up all the pro's and con's but I really appreciate the input, it certainly is helping me to come to some sort of decision either way.:)

Some pics. Any thoughts?
