hi, i've just removed my rear anti roll bar from my defender 110 to replace the bushes, while it is off i decided to clean it and repaint it. what i want to know is can i still drive it without the anti roll bar on while the paint dries.

Yep. Early Landys did not have anti roll bars fitted. I took my front one off my TD5 to clean and paint it and drove around for 3 months before I got round to refitting it. It even went through its MOT without it. To be honest I could not notice any real difference but then I didn't fully load my motor while it was off. Went round corners just as well as well as it did when the roll bar was on.

i think it is to allow greater articulation. several peeps have had the A/R bar jump over the axle with weird results. theres a couple of posts on here about it.

you've had an accident and plod/VOSA or whoever they are called today want to example your vehicle - they find it's missing a component that affects the steering/braking etc

guess who'd going to have some heavy duty explaining to do ?

The original question was

and the answer is yes.

there was an article in LRO a couple of months back where they mentioned taking the anti-roll bar off to make it better for off-roading. a police officer contacted them in the letters section, and said how irresponsible it was to be offering that kind of advice, especially in the wake of that accident where the 110 ended up in the river, and 4 children died (related to badly done modifications which were intended to make the landy better off-road). it's a difficult call, as earlier models didn't have them anyway, but if you didn't declare it to the insurance company, and you had an accident, then you might be in some serious brown stuff!
