ANR2858 eye cross rod

Ok, so i am replacing the drag link and track rod end, and long story short i cut the tube down to get it in a vice and this is where i'm at presently,

I thought i'd left enough to not cut through the threaded part, not realising there's an unthreaded section too. I was using a 1mm disc and it went through this like a hot knife through butter, i genuinely thought it was just the tube.

Does the unthreaded part actually do anything?

At nearly £100 for a new one if this ones safe i'd rather not replace.

There’s a couple on eBay at the moment , Italy and Portugal, the one from Italy says it’s new, alas though don’t know who the manufacturers are

If you can weld, grind the joining ends to a point, then fill it with weld all round. Grind down welds till tube end is round.

Find a good used one?

Don't know how important it is but I wouldn't take the chance with anything steering related

Get another one, do not weld, Safety item,the extra length performs a support function.
You could take the opportunity to change the steering box output drop arm for a disco 300 one along with a disco steering rod which has ordinary track rod ends each side.

The spigot section is to provide lateral strength and ridgidity - if it was just a little short section threaded in you would be in a situation that the whole thing is only being supported over a short distance. The only way I can see to go here is a replacement, good second hand, or new.

I am not 100% certain of this, but I am sure it is illegal to weld any steering component. I know it is illegal for example to weld a drop arm onto a steering box shaft and as I say, I am sure it extends to the whole steering system. I certainly would not feel happy driving a vehicle with welded bits on the steering system.

Please don't be tempted to save money on this repair. Welding a shaft like this is all very well, but a weld will only penetrate the outside, which leaves a huge section

if you had rested the tube where the threads are on something firm and whacked the the tube along and all around where the threads are eventually it would have unscrewed by hand

Thanks to all who have given advice, provided links and tips how to do it properly for future reference, i guessed it was donald ducked, but thought it was worth asking. I have got one on order from LR Direct.
