Well a happy ending to the story, just been for the retest and she passed flying colours, with no advisories...he was also impressed with the work I had done....its a nice feeling being self sufficient fixing things :cool:

Not 100% good news, just re-read the 'new' style MOT and there is an advisory - Front offside hub oil seal leaking - so not finished yet - that's if you can be ever finished when owning a Disco.....more searching needed to find out what is involved in sorting this out....

Anyhow I have learned that with a Discovery you take the best times when they come as they sometimes get outweighed by the worst lol.

Hub seals can leak when having oil in them and then be ok if you replace it with one shot grease.
 
Might leave this job to a guy I know in a land rover garage (since I have done my sills myself and saved a few bob there), he has quoted me £80.00 for the job, and too be honest that doesn't seem too bad, given I don't have any of the tools to take off the hub etc, and no torque wrench for putting it back together, so will cost over half that for me to do the job myself, plus skinned knuckles and the rest after reading posts on here :eek:
 
You would save yourself some more money if you take GreenHornet's advice and replace the oil with one-shot swivel grease. Its easy to do without dismantling the hub although there is a school of thought that the grease can get flung onto the inside of the swivels away from the CV joint by centrifugal force - I've not found it to be a problem though.

As it's only an advisory you don't have to do it straight away so it might be worth giving it some thought?
 
You drain out what is left of the oil and squirt the liquid grease in instead. You can buy it in pre-measured sachets which you just squirt into the filler hole in each swivel. I can't remember the price but it is only a few pounds per sachet. The only tools you need are to remove the drain and filler plugs.

Might be worth searching on here to see what other peoples thoughts are but my disco has had it in for at least 15 years and is still on the original CV joints at just under 200k (that's probably jinxed it now and one will fail tomorrow!)

Hi guys, thought I better get my hubs sorted, and going down the route of the one shot grease in both of them, so have ordered the grease, and should be with me soon.

I have searched about, and read up on the differences between using oil and grease, and also read up on the threads on replacing the seals....but cannot find anything about changing from oil to grease, and where to drain the oil from, do I need to wash it out with anything before putting in the grease, and then where to put in the grease :confused:....sorry for the 'dumb' questions, but never had to do owt like this before, so still learning.

If anyone could post up a pic of a hub and what I need to undo to drain, and then where to squirt in the grease would be a great help.

And I am sorry if there is a thread about showing this, but I have searched everything I can think of and read through about 40 threads, but didn't find anything that would help me - probably just not using the correct 'key' word.....

That one has gone, but just in the process of making up a new jig for a rack that will sit the same height as the roof bars, so as low as you can get it ;)

Should have the jig finished tonight to get cracking on making the new rack.
 
Last night I did the one shot grease in both hubs. Was expecting it to be a sod of job with the bolts not coming out, but they came out very easy - for a change. Couldn't believe how long it took for the little bit of oil to drain out tho.....

The leaking hub still had quite a bit of oil in, about a 2/3 of a litre, whereas the non leaking side only had about a 1/8 of a litre :eek:

Not sure if it my imagination, but it does seem smoother on the drive into work this morning....
