Got the old girl back, and just for a change I would like to hear pass on the first time....but not this time.

Failed on the sills, so time to put my new found welding skills to the test.

Other thing was the handbrake needs tightening/adjusting - why on earth is this necessary when its an automatic - its going no where when left in park - ha hum....something else I need to look at - I know to search - but is it an easy job on a 300 tdi auto?

Last thing to rub salt into a wound was the number plate bulb - wouldn't care, checked all the bulbs etc yesterday when I did a pre-check (saw my sills but hoped for a blind eye ) and they all worked.....he did reckon that if I had not of put on the sliders and disturbed the sills then he would of passed her, but because they had been drilled etc, and bits had fallen off, then that's the reason - even argued that I had strengthened them as fitted new steel on the outside, but was fighting a losing argument.....

Handbrake is piece of ****, theres a bolt on the bottom of the handbrake drum, tighten this bolt, job done.

As for the sills, it wouldn't be a landrover otherwise, I have got to do mine soon as its MOT time in a few months, I have currently got a 8 inch hole in mine, **** knows how it passed the last MOT but it wasn't mine at that time so who cares, I prefer to get the jobs done properly...

Nice to hear about the handbrake - will do that when I am under sorting the sills, where is the handbrake drum - I know I should really search ;)

I did tell the guy I am planning in putting in heavy duty box sections in th esummer when I can park it up for a few days to get it all sorted, so didn't really want to start patching it now in the hope.....but no......patching it is.

Need to find a garage that doesn't have a ramp, and they have bad knees so can't get down and check....

follow rear propshaft forwards till you see a metal drum this is the handbrake drum, the bolt is central at the bottom of the drum tighten it clockwise until satisfied (usually between 3-5 clicks) make sure you dont over tighten tho

Cheers bud - was just working my way through the search results, as still hadn't found a pic of it - as all TD5's it would seem. But reckon once I am under will see it and get it sorted out ;)

Get a better testing station. The bloke I see is very fare. Keeps an eye thing's & gives advise. He knows it's a Land rover & thing's will rust.

I did think that, but have paid the test fee now, so might as well get it patched up for a free test and get my ticket, and not bother paying out another test fee. Will have another look around next year - although I did hope this guy would be more understanding as he did the test last year....loyalty and all that crap.....

Just rang my local steel place, as was thinking about doing the whole job now, and box sections - 100x60x3 are £60 plus VAT and come in a 7.5m length so will have plenty...only problem is they are out of stock of them - only have the 5mm which is £90 plus VAT.

So will patch up for now, and wait till the warmer months come and and order in some box sections.....only problem is what else I may find when I start cutting away - anyone want an expedition rack - will help my sill fund :(

Post 659 on my Thread Discovery Rust will show you how I stripped and cleaned the handbrake unit. All in all in only took a short time and I was taking photos and cleaning as I went.

I have done the box section sills as well. It's not an easy days work, more like a weekend with preperation before hand. I used 3.2mm thick steel. It's in the thread too if that helps.

no such thing as loyalty when it comes to making money out of us punters.
good luck on the re test.:fencing:
These comments are a bit harsh, the MOT is a test, its failed, its not the tester and its not the garage trying to get more business, if its failed its failed, if VOSA turned up ten minutes after and wanted to test it they could stop him testing and yes, it does happen, VOSA love to turn up out the blue.

The rules are set, any corrosion within 30cm of a chassis or structural mounting is a failure, theres no ifs or buts, if there is corrosion its a failure. As he said if it hadn't been disturbed and wasn't clearly visable he wouldn't be able to fail it (the tester can not disassemble or remove anything from a vehicle during the test) but as it was visable he has to, the guy is just doing his job and hes doing it well.

i used to use a guy, but after i found him digging away at what was a small patch of rust, then claimed that it (just fell off). i found somewhere else thats both firm but fair. I don't agree on letting it slide if its major structual part, however when it comes to bulbs then surely a simple get that changed on the way home would do. Lets face it things like bulbs cab fail straight after a test anyways

Sorry don't mean to be harsh just try & find a place that is firm but fair.
As I said the bloke I use knows that if anything little thing is wrong I'll sort straight away.

That is a standard procedure to have a poke around if it looks like it could be bad, it should be a poke from a tap hammer though and not removing underseal or paint e.t.c.

As for the bulbs, if they dont work its a failure, its black and white and VOSA wont see it the same way you do im afraid, its frustrating but thats the rules. We always fix bulbs after anyway and do the ticket, people dont get upset over a £1 bulb.

Yeah i didnt mean to sound so moody over it, I just see it from the otherside thats all. We dont make the rules, we just follow them. Some testers are dodgy, theres no doubting that but they wont be around long, reputations matter in this world.

I dont blame the mot guy, as like its been said, hes only doing his job, and he said he wouldnt have failed it on the handbrake or bulb, as he would have just told me to get them sorted. He did ponder over the sills, as he knows what they are like, but too close to a structual mount to let it go....i sort of knew it was touch and go with sills, but would have preferred not to do anything with them just yet, and box section them in the warmer months.

But been at it most of the evening. Hand brake done, like it was said on this thread, piece of piddle, just a couple of turns of the adjuster nut and sorted :D

Rear number plate lights were a little more involved.....completely knackered and plastic lenses were black!! New connectors, cleaned plastic lenses, new bulbs, and also fabricated new fasteners and they are now done :D

Rock slider removed, poked about, drive now covered in crap and rust  have made up a temp sill out of 1mm steel I have, all ready to weld on tomorrow, then hammerite black and jobs done for re test. Wont be pretty, but functional till I can sort out some proper box sections then will strip both sides and do it proper, like green hornet has done, great thread by the way....ever in my neck of the woods and fancy doing another set of sills....feel free to pop in, beer tokens are mandatory ;)

Yeah but the gut wasn't using his tap hammer it was a flat blade screwdriver, it was that bad that the only metal he had distroyed was clean good metal, hence why i don't use him anymore. Think there needs to be more friendly landy testers, as some see a landi and think that its just one big failure before they have even started

.

Locate the handbrake drum - it's about a foot in diam and is between the front and back props. The adjusting bolt is on the forward face, at 6 'o clock.

Let the handbrake fully off, tighten up the adjuster until you can't turn it, then slacken off sufficiently so that three click on the handbrake lever has the brake fully on.

Make one final check that the handbrake drum turns freely when the handbrake is off.

Where are you anyhow, update your profile it will help, that's my experience. Sills are easy and when ready just pm me and we can have a chat. A weekend and you will be sorted.

Cheers bud, might just take you up on that offer ;)

Quite annoying that the work I am doing will need to be cut out when i do them again with proper heavy duty box sections...but hey ho, I need the ticket, so not I can really do....

Oh, just based south of Bath by the way.

Well a happy ending to the story, just been for the retest and she passed flying colours, with no advisories...he was also impressed with the work I had done....its a nice feeling being self sufficient fixing things
