Having finished reassembly after new clutch, gearbox rebuild and rear crank gubbins, I eagerly depressed the clutch pedal and put it in first. Then drove into the lawn mower.

It would seem the the clutch is not lifting. There's resistance on the pedal and it seemed to bleed ok. Nearly everthing is new in the clutch (series 3 type).
Anyone got a suggestion for what moronic mistake I made putting it together?

Would putting the friction plate in back to front cause it?

Doh! For the avoidance of repeat stupidity, it should be orientated with the protruding center boss facing away from the flywheel, yes?

It's (remotely) possible i'm not an idiot. While stripping to get to the clutch, I found that the (new) slave cylinder was leaking quite badly past the seal.
Do you reckon this could stop the clutch actuating? Or I am clutching at straws.

Bleed the clutch again and ensure reservoir is full.If slave seal is leaking that bad air may be getting back into the system past it.

Hooray! It has a working clutch. Replacing the slave cylinder and a bleed then it was all fine. Just goes to show you can't assume something will be working even when new.
