had my window open yesterday, driving along, noticed i have a klangy rattle as i decelerate. it goes away if i press the clutch pedal or accelerate again. got underneath and there is a bit of play in the universal joints in the double joint. i know there is the other bearing inside it to hold the 2 uj apart. will check oils in main and transfer box. anything else i should check while under there? cheers.

What year is it?

If you can, lock the CDL using a spanner on top of the transfer box, remove front prop, take her for a spin and see if that has got rid of the noise.

its a 51 plate td5 . not sure if i have the CDL option. took front prop off and replaced the universal joints and the centre balljoint. noise still there.

just been out in it. driving along and put main box into neutral and noise goes away. assuming this means its gear box related and not transfer box.

it may do put it might be because youve released the pressure of the transmission having to turn engine , ujs are buggered if theres any play in them at all

yep. i guess do the output bearing and oil seal next. is that a hard job. seen a guide on here, looks straight forward enough. but i am ok as long as nothing springs out or put something back wrong

there is play at the prop flange, so the output bearing needs to be changed anyway. any ideas what sort of damage it may do if it hasn't already if i keep driving it till new bearing is fitted?

Mine had exactly the same problem - everything looked quite slack. Spent £700 getting things fixed, only for it all to sound bad again 6 months later :( Think something must be out of line to cause it to all degenerate so quickly?
Also, heard massive 'chugging' sound from underneath - all the bolts had fallen out that hold the gearbox and transfer box together (I think?) she carried on driving though and got me home.

It couldn't be anything to do with the heat-shield above the centre-box exhaust, could it?

Dave

i saw that on another post when searching the forum a while ago. checked and fixed it up then. would that stop when depress the clutch? will check again.

It could be the heat sheild.
My mates Vitara has it but specifically at 2.5k. Going up to the farm, you have to.slow down to 10mph unless you want to be pitched out the window or through the roof. It sounds more like someone banging a plate with a spanner than anything else.

I did have a similar sort of noise on my 300tdi. Turns out it was the front 2 wheel bearing where knackered to the point i was asked if i really had be driving it 100mile a day down the motorways.
