Despite the annoying rain and grey sky, we have been working on Siegfried and after several attempts, we have managed to get the engine running:

A few pictures of the workshop and me trying to scrape off some paint of Siegfried. It is almost impossible to remove the black spray paint :( But we have managed to scrape off the dark green. The less layers we have, the easier it will be to repaint it.

Nice, nice vehicle!

Stripping paint can be a real pain (to put it mildly), the layers and layers on my old girl gave me alot of arm ache and no doubt shortened my life expentancy by a considerable amount from the dust!

In the end I turned to paint stripper for the roof & sides - and I seriously wish i'd used it all over. Nitromors is good stuff, and makes paint prep so, so much easier. It does come at a cost though - you need alot (or at least I did). In a long days work the vehicle can be stripped.

Looking forward to following this project!

Matt

heyup matt, stripped in a day, wish it was true with mine, again long days sanding (2 angle grinders and a drill later) and i still not finished, my wings are/were coated with about an inch of filler (not sure why as they are solid)
think i might try the paint stripper if only for something a bit different lol
the worst thing i have been stripping is layers and layers of (i think) waxoil, everywhere including the drive, garden and hallway lol

I intend to use the Nitromors and pressure washer technique when the time finally comes to paint the bodywork, it's been recommended by a few.

You're making great progress mate, keep it up! :)

For some reason the nitromors reacted with the paint on the bumper...its being replaced anyway so not too worried.
Got some van sides coming hopefully today.

Spent the day on the 88" recently, got the wings off and a few other smaller bits.

Needs new footwells and door pillars, but the top edge of the bulkhead is mint!

We decided in the end to bite the bullet and get a new chassis from Richards. BEWARE however that their stated IIA suffix A-C is actually an A-B chassis, as our original suffix C chassis has the sticking out check strap brackets, not the flush ones. Something to keep in mind should anyone else order one in future.

Our tame mechanic has so far broken the vehicle down...

Sorted the axles -

Got it to rolling chassis(ish) stage -

And fitted the rear tub and replacement petrol tank.

I have also made an arrangement with a tame winch rebuilder to have the capstan winch brought up to scratch.

I didn't discuss it with them as the real nitty-gritty rivet-counting truth is that *early* C suffix vehicles DID have the flat type, it changed some way through production. As the check straps are an optional aspect I should have clocked it and specified what I wanted on the order. By the time we realised the chassis had been painted and so on so it made more sense to sort out some kind of bracketry to do the job instead of starting all over again.

don't know how I missed this thread till now, excellent read

Thanks, I hadn't updated it in a while which is perhaps why you missed it. I don't anticipate much will be done now until after xmas, at which point the engine and box should go back in (nothing significantly wrong with them) and we will start on the bulkhead. This isn't really a total rebuild, more a recomissioning and tidying.
