Hi hope somebodys expertise can help me out,
got a 97 discovery diesel auto edc model and i picked up a second hand brain for it which was supposed to be in "good working order" amr 6228 which is the same part no. as my one which is working ok in the vehicle at the moment ,
i connected it and it just turned over without firing, replaced with my one and fires up straight away,
i can only think of 3 things:
1, the box may need to be bolted in for an earth as it was such an **** to get to i just plugged it in to see if it was ok
2, the ecu may need programmiing to vehicle ( sounds a bit advanced for 97 discovery !)
3, the ecu is f****** and i need to have a word with the chap who i bought it from.......... but before i go down this road i like to be sure !!
so any help would be appreciated
thanks in advance

From what I understand , and what has stopped me swapping the ecu on a troublesome EDC D1 , the unit needs to be synched to the security ecu and some other stuff . It has been explained on here when I asked a couple of years back .

Your "new" EDC ECU will need a security relearn on Testbook before it will run in your car. What is the issue with your car - EDC is VERY reliable and therefore mostly misunderstood when problems arise.

My problems have always been sensor and wiring based , on the whole . The sensor info is available so you can test it , from the connectors if you cannot reach and then the wiring can be belled and measured at the plug to the ecu . Its a fiddly bugger to do , hence I have never got around to it , there has always been something more pressing . EDC is great when it works but often doesnt and I think 8V has hit it right on.....misunderstood . But then again - arent we all ?

Its a good system, think how many Audi/VW vehicles there are using this system that have covered huge mileage with little problem.
Compare that to Bosch common rail, how often do you see TD4/6 LR's with starting/running issues ? Not even thinking about any other European vehicle makers that are still usingBosch common rail.
The only problem I have with the EDC on 300 auto Disco's is the price for a new throttle pot - but then plenty of people just give up and fit a mechanically governed VE pump,so there must be a few on shelves sitting around.
I'll keep on driving mine, currently on 186,000m with no worries. And if I can persuade a customer of mine to sell me his 2000my FL 1 with the 2.0L series EDC equipped diesel - I'll buy that too.

I was next door neighbour to the local Bosch fuel injection specialist for years when I lived at he family farm . My father had endless trouble with "kart" and the neighbour was always saying to rip all the EDC out and replace it with manual op stuff . I thought it a better idea to find what was up with the EDC and fix it as I have had several trucks with it and they have all been great . Just this one , my fathers old one that has been a real bugger . I think it was down to neglect and then total misunderstanding , my father was a diesel man of the old school and really knew his stuff in his day but was not open to new (to him !) concepts . I inherited the vehicle and have never got around , as I said , to fixing the EDC , I am sure its simply the loom has been damaged by people working on the vehicle who didnt understand what it was . Suitably rewired Im sure it will be fine . I am currently running an EDC D1 with no probs , on that front anyway . I just think that the install was badly thought out on LRs front .

I think its fine, the only cabling faults I've seen have been on Freelanders with the 2.0ltr L series engine - the loom fails where it comes up the front of the block to the injector pump.(Not had any o D1's)
EDC on Disco 1's over the years has been good. The only faults I've seen is where the CEL comes on because some tw-t has done a poor job on changing the cam belt,or that the whole car has been through a rather large puddle and drowned.
Only one case of a knackered injector pump though, except on the 6cyl BMW in P38's - they wear badly but often a hot start fix kit off the "Bay" sorts them.
The common rail Bosch stuff on TD4/6 is a much better money maker for me...

The classic one is melted wiring to coolant sensor on top of head , followed by wires trapped under cylinder head , both from cabling not being correctly refitted after headgasket job . Seen repeatedly .

thanks for info
did not realise they were that advanced for that time in relation to the rest of the vehicle !
nothing wrong with my edc on vehicle (at moment) just that one come up at sensible money at thought it would be good as a come in handy bit as most of the electrics are so unreliable !
i shall just keep it and that will be a way of making sure i dont need it !!
once again thanks for info
