Hi,

Up till now my engine always got the 6,8 liter motoroil when oilchange was done (including oilfilter but as this is of the 'hanging' type it doesn't keep any oil in it when engine is off I think) and what I noticed was that the oil level was about 1 cm above the maximum on the stick (oil just touched the 9 of the part#), so now I first put 6 liter in it which was still too much, took some out so I'm tend to believe it is more something like 5,5 liter it needs than that 6,8. On another forum someone suggested I might have an incorrect oillevel stick (mine is the same since car was new though), so can one of the early Td4 owners (mine's a 2001) possibly have a look at the part number of their stick to see whether it's the same as on mine, namely: 7 785 931 (see also the attached picture, "niveau met 6,8 l" means "level with 6,8 liter"). Thanks.

hmmm. . . .fink yer fergetin that your oil filter is large un holds er lot er oil ,that is possible yer error willo. . . .:)

After filling it with only 6 liter it was still above the max.mark, then started the engine and let it run for a minute, stopped it and measured again and level still above the max. (same as it was before I started it). As the oilfilter is not hanging but standing I think it drains as soon as the engine is stopped releasing the oil back to the sump ??
Excuse me but I think that "the book" as such could be wrong after all ??

6.8L!!! I've only ever put 5.5 in for oil and filter change. You have to let it sit for a while before checking it as it takes ages to drain back.

no Minge - it cant be the same one - it mite be similar - mite even be identical - but never the same :D

stop it flops ,yer gonna confuse willo . . . .un then we's git all thim old rockit photo's agin un dads army. . . . .:p :D :) ;)

Hi MHM,
Thanks for telling as for one moment I was afraid I had ming's dipstick in my car. Just to make sure it's mine (with a yellow top where ming's one has a green top I believe:D ) I'll add another picture taken today(mainly to please ming:D :D :D ), I measured of course the only one thing not done by wigleytuff, I measured from the bottom of the yellow top till the top of the max.level and it is 59,9 centimeters (599).

wigleytuff's <-> mine
705 <-> 706
679 <-> 679
663 <-> 666
95 <-> 97

As said from bottom of ring where it serveds as stop on the tube up till the max. level mark it is 599 and measuring only the metal part of the stick, from below the yellow plastic part havingt the two O-rings on up till the max. level it is 569. A millimeter difference left or right they are both the same, so as clutchdust says, and i fully agree with it, it looks as 5,5 liters is enough, not the 6,8 as it says in the book.

different sump capacities ?
difference between auto & manual?
I don't f*cking know, as I've not had mine long enough to change the oil myself. BUT I had it serviced when I bought it, the garage I use are pretty trustworthy, (obviously not a main dealer) and the invoice said 6.5l of oil
coming up for an oil and filter change soon, so watch this space.
(2 x 4.0l Castrol GTD Magnatec for £31 plus VAT at costco, good price do we think ?)

Guess each engine needs a different amount of oil, depending on the number and size of dents in the oilpan (sump) ???:D :D :D
