Evening all,

Just got back from an amazing weekend at Billing and took my Hippo off road properly for the first time, and how good was she! Didn't see any other dirty ones.....however I now have a few issues, probably because I sat in the bog with slurry up to the headlights for about 5 mins.
First up is the alternator, light is permenantly on, on the dash. Battery is about 12.1v and now dropped to about 11v (engine running?after 5 more laps and 15 more water baths and a trip home. I've cleaned the terminals as best as possible from above and given the alternator a good soak with WD40, cleaned the little sticks and cr&p out the holes to reveal a clean copper winding! Belts are running as is the alternator I think.
Apart from the usual, check the terminals extra closely (belly pan removed etc) and clean it from below, any other checks/tests I can do before ripping it out and putting a new one in?
Secondly, possibly I think linked to the above, unless anyone knows differently, but since my muddy play time I can't get above 45mph. Only noticed it on the way home but the power drops right off and starts to fall when about 2500rpm. Naturally I'll fix the above before I get really worried and I'm going to check my airbox and filter because it may of got a bit soggy, but again any simple suggestions before I over complicate it will be good.
Thanks a lot
Happy Chris, muddy broken Hippo

Let it dry out and see what happens could be commutator is still wet and crappy.
As for the speed issue.....soggy air filter wont help as engine cant breath, take it out briefly and see what it goes like.
Am sure there will be those on site soon who will have some more answers from experience!
At least you had a fun trip! :)

got my alternator wet one. it blew a fuse in the fuse box under the steering. Replaced the fuse and the charge light disappeared.

Alternator recently got wet due to water pump dieing. Charge light came on....change the fuse again.

Wading is depth 500mm, so where do they put the alternator???

no revs about 2500rpm? Ain't that the turbo vacuum actuator for the vanes that cause that? is the filter on the turbo bunged up with mud?

I've already checked the fuses and unfortunately they are all good. Cheers for the suggestion about turbo hose, will have a look as part of my wash down.
Hippo, car in front went through fine, I floated, stopped and then sunk, hense the delay in pulling me out

Update, after having the battery on charge all night the wife drove to work fine today and easily got above 75mph......

Seperately, what size output does a normal alternator on td4 with air con have? Can't find anything conclusive and everywhere seams to suggest either a 100 amps, 120 amps or 150 amp but naturally the price reflects this

120 amps I do not think the 150 amps will fit as I was told they are for the Freelander 2 , try hosing the alternator out as there is mud in there then let it stand to drain ,and it should be ok, I totally messed up I for got Billing was on and we went somewhere else

Cheers Teddywood, I'll give it a go at the weekend, save plugging her in each night. Did you flush it out in situ?
Billing was really good, weather was nice and the Freelander turned a few heads

If you've been in water for a while it will be worth while taking the door foot step trim off to reveal the edge of the carpet, to feel under the carpet for water. The carpet has a thick sponge backing.

yes flush it out in situ a lot of people do not realise that 12 volts will work under water it is all the crud that does the damage ,BUT do not try with 240 volts under water

Right tomorrow is D day for the alternator, have spent the week cleaning and flushing from above to no joy. Yesterday I took the belly plate off and jet washed my belly and hubs.
Cleaned the alternator from below and removed the last of debris, fort with the little plug for an hour and eventually got it off only to find it totally dry, a little bit of muddy water run out of the conduit, so if it doesn't work, she might well be off to the garage as it seams a pig of a job to change the alternator on the drive

It gets in the brush pack and jams everything, the result is the brushes loose contact and it stops charging. Wash it all you like, it won't clean it out. You need to remove it, take the back off, remove the brush pack, clean it and put it all back together! This is assuming it hasn't done the bearings! It's cheaper to find somewhere that can repair it rather than replace. The last time it happened to mine, the brushes jammed, destroyed themselves, made a muddy carbony paste which shorted everything and it caught fire! This is why I now avoid mud! :D

All fixed! Power fault was a nakered alternator and loss of power turbo boost solenoid kerput. Although the turbo breather filter was full of mud so next mod will be to raise it a bit higher
