Hi all,
Would be very grateful for some advice. In August I bought a 2001 Discovery 2 , 7 seat ES auto from a dealer and it came with 3 months parts and labour warranty. I've noticed a few oil leaks and it has been in to their work shop for repair. Two of the three leaks have been solved but there is still one that they say is a typical discovery problem and that even if they change the O ring it will leak again in a month. The leak is on the transmission, not the gearbox itself. He showed me on a ramp today and it is a long threaded bar that seems to run through the middle of the transmission. I think there is a bolt either end but the O ring and leak is facing the front of the car. He said it would take a lot of work to replace it as it would all have to come out to replace it and therefore not worth it, plus it would fail. He said as it is it will lose an egg cup worth of oil a month.
I wonder what your thoughts are. Should I go back to the dealership and say i want it sorted? Would this be unreasonable - my feeling is not. Is it a typical disco problem? If I'm paying six grand for a car I don't think it should have any leaks? If it is an O ring then surely the rubber has perished so it would not fail again in a month? As you can tell I'm far from an expert on cars so would be very grateful for advice. Many thanks in advance.
 
I would say yes, get them to sort it out.
It might only be an eggcup of oil a month, but you have only got 2ltrs of oil in there in the first place, which would mean you would have to get under and top it up every couple of months.
It also means if you were to go through any deep water, you run the risk of sucking the dirty water into it, and then you have to change the oil prematurely.
 
Read the crock of **** thread. know your statutory rights. The fault is their responsibility to fix, whatever it may cost or you can ask for your money back. Contact trading standards if they give yu any ****.
 
Sounds a bit 'iffy' to me, I had a Freelander and now have an 06 disco 3, no leaks on mine (touch wood). If the car is under warranty however they should be honouring the warranty and fixing the problem. If I was you and you have a warranty document still valid/in date tell them you want it fixed or you'll bill them for the work being done elsewhere or if you're paying for the car with finance contact the finance company, they have certain legal obligations to ensure you have not been sold a car 'not fit for purpose'. Yeah i would go back and get it sorted. It didnt leave the factory leaking so it shouldnt be leaking. I have a customer with a 2002 es auto with a 150k on the clock and no leaks. I wouldn't go down the warrenty route but say by law you have to fix it regardless of cost they are just trying to get out of a pain in the arse job. Also if it does leak in a months time take it back and get it redone! Sounds to me there either just making the whole it will be like it in a month line or there not fixing it right in the first place.

leak is from intermediate shaft ,it is very common and you rarely see any that dont leak ,its just degree that varies ,it can be fixed by pulling transfer box back to alllow shaft to be slid out enough to fit new o ring and sliconing o ring ,if case hasnt worn too much in which case youd need another transfer box
 
I once said my disco dont leak. :)
then the power steering seals started.
I once said no gear box leaks,
then they started to drip a little after a run on a summers day.
I once said my front swivels dont leak, but they too dripped a little in the heat.
my diffs are fine, my u/js are greased regually, but one fecker still squeaks.

I done my steering box oil seals for MOT last week, yup, they now still leak "a tiny bit"
I`ll check my gearboxes in a month or two when its "cooler"
my swivells no longer "leak" but are in constant lubrication after I put a greasegun full of molygrease in each one that mixed with the oil within.
it dont use hardly any antifreeze/coolants, but I carry a spare litre of it under the bonnet, along with a small bottle of radseal.
I also carry under the bonnet 2 -1litre bottles of screenwash,
& 1 litre of brake/clutch fluid,
all for "just in case"

everytime I drive off after parking all day or all night, I always look at the floor,
to see if its sprung a leak anywhere else.

my disco is 21 years old,
but I have done much to it.
I`m partially disabled, but get in & get out with ease.
I have trouble driving my daughters KA.
I "find my pedals" with my diebetic, sadly feeling lost, feet with ease in my disco doosel 1,
but ****e myself when I drive the KA, as the pedals are in the wrong place for this old bloke.

I read of a bloke who`s spent a kings ransom for a shinier disco than mine,
that has damp patches,
and should I worry about my "damp patches"

Thanks for the help. I went back and he agreed to do the job, i wasnt going to take no for an answer anyway. He did say if it leaks in 6 months he coulnt be held responsible but it would then be out of warranty anyway. Going in next week for a fourth time and will now hopefully be sorted.
