alright,

my alternator has failed yet again (two in two years!) on my 1991 200 TDI defender. I have decided to upgrade to a 65 amp unit from a 45 amp unit, as i am now running a few spots lights. But i have a couple of questions about the upgrade.

Firstly - can you get 65 amp units that have the plug connector on the back, rather than just posts? and if so where from?
If not, which wires go to which corresponding posts on the new unit?

Secondly - will i need to upgrade my wiring to cope with the extra 20 amps? or should it be ok?

Thanks

Joe

The wiring should be OK. I use to go through alternators on my old TD engine yearly as well, But since i started buying dearer alternator they last for ever. Fitted a quality alternator to my 300tdi a bit dearer but well worth it same with start motors by bosh or OE
