alternator bearing

Hi chaps. How hard is it to change the bearing on an alternator? Mine's started to sing to me a bit. DIY job? Any specs for the bearing that I must match or can I just get one the same size and bung it in? Tips welcome!

Actually while I'm at it, there's the faintest of rattles from the belt tensioner. Can I fix or must I replace?

once yutaken it out, the old bearing should have numbers on it - take the ID to a bearing supplier.

take the bearing with you so he can match it!!

there are 3 dimensions to maseure.

overall size.
inner hole size and thickness of bearing.

once measured got to simplybearings.co.uk and puty in dimensions to the shopping list and see wot u want to spend.ther mostly next day if ordered by 11am...

its not that simple, BoB - there are other parameters, such as speed rating and type (roller/ball/etc) - hence best advice is to take the bearing to a supplier - they can get an exact equivalent then.

agreed.The skf i replaced mine with has been fine.i wack high speed stainless in everything.

unless u got the proper tools the tensioner is a throwaway item, also the rear bearing on the altnator can be a real pain to remove without a press.

cheers all. ssmn, sadly i reckon you're right. will just live with the tensioner for a bit as i've a few other bits and bobs i need so i'm going to order it all in one shot. but will give changing the bearing a go, what the heck!
