hi guys
well i am taking my series 88 to bits and the bulkhead needs some welding, i have bought new door pillars, top brackets and floor pans, i will need something to go along the top where the vents are as it is really bad. My question is (as i dont weld/never welded before) is there an alternative way of fixing these items and repairing the top bulkhead without welding - or do i need to dig deep into my pockets???

buy a mig they aint expensive and teach your self how to weld its not that hard once you get going but you will need to buy a grinder aswell not only to clean the area you are about to weld but also to grind back the seagull **** welding you have just done but practic makes perfect good luck with ya series mate

not sure about welding myself i been told it not that easy and would hate to fick it up and have to end up handing out beer tokens anyway lol

it might be better to get a bulkhead thats in better condition i have one next to my garage that just needs a pair of footwells and a couple of plates on a door pillar

It's easy enough, I taught myself my welding mine isn't exactly Japanese fishscale beads but it's proven itself time and time again structurally. Just get a cheap 2nd hand mig, some time and scrap metal and you'll soon pick it up. Worst comes to the worst, you'll have the tools then pay a mate to do it lol.

On another note body shops and restorers are starting to use some sort of adhesive/bonding agent for panel work although how it'd cope or if its suitable I couldn't say, but it is said to be stronger than the metal itself (dunno if I'd trust it though...)

Pity your not closer - like 200 miles, lol! - I'd be there in a flash on the promise of tea and biccys :D

It's all in the prepwork, base metal quality, the right gas, and amperage/feed rate.

If your willing to learn, and invest in some decent equipment to do it with, you can be a confident operator in a relatively short time.

not suitable for older vehicles can only be used on newer vehicles that use it in their original design

where are you and how much????

essex near chelmsford, £30?? its still got half the dash in the wiper motor and arms etc are still on it........ i have most of a series 3 109" sitting in my yard lol

do you know where littleborough is just past todmorden heading towards rochdale theres a landy place i know of that more than likely has a series 3 bulkhead for sale 01706 378784 called green brothers and have been in business since 1969 verry trusted firm in my opinion ;););)

On a resto programme on sky it was used on an mgb for the rear quarter panels and I've heard of it being used to replace the front chassis legs of a mk3 fiesta rs turbo on fiestaturbo.com by a bodyshop during a restoration (neither of those were glued from the factory!). that's the only reason I mentioned it but like I said dunno if I'd trust it!

just cause they have used it doesn't make it correct!

Agreed... Like I said I dunno if I'd trust it but it has been used in the past and no doubt will be used again and seems to be getting more common

is the bulkhead off the motor?
if you want a trip to shipley with i'll go thru the basics of welding with yer, and if you/me can get the bulkhead to the workshop, i'll help you with it.

by arrangement tho, cos me welding gears at a brewery at the moment.
could be in the evenings as a bit of a project?

beer tokens accepted, we'd have to see how much steel it needs.

hi nrgserv where in shipley? my parents live in nab wood
bulkhead not off the motor yet, not sure how long it will take me to get it off.
thanks for the offer for lessons and help - that would be great but can we not do it where your welding things are (mmmm brewery)
i will pm you my phone number
