alternative to welding

hey up mate
i have someone who is reasonably close from the forums who has offered to help me out, going to go see him soon. what welding network is it - do they rent or sell cheap welders???

Nah its just an idea i had where members who can weld and are willing to help other members could get together and do repairs, welding etc...

Not about renting anything

From the recent threads I think my set probably isnt for you.
Its a brit made multiweld 180amp single phase industrial set, it has a copper wound transformer, output choke and a capacitor bank, it comes with a part bottle of c02, a part roll of 0.8mm wire and a brand new iec euro torch with a couple of spare tips.
Its a world apart from clarke, and cost a lot more well over 500 notes, and its only seen light use, so I want 220 notes for it with the gas and torch complete.
Gonna put it up on eblag soon, probably wait till the weather warms up and folks start bashing in their garages.

yeah your right mr pepper its out of my league, would only spend that much if i could make money from it, definately not for learning on, i will keep looking for that elusive mig welder for £20 to turn up :confused::doh:

bear in mind that you get what you pay for.
i've bought plenty of stuff like that, and you spend more time fixing it and havin to buy new bits for it than you do using it.
theres more moving parts on a mig welder, and electronics to wrong.
even new ones snot up and have to have new bits, shagged plenty of tips and shrouds on mine, (classed as consumables) and had to get a new handle to me knacking the thread up the tips screw into.

Cheap welders will be a nightmare to learn on as they weld pretty badly, oh and dont by any thing sip as they are bags of trouble. There are good s/h ones out there you just have to look. I paid £50 for my 195amp sealey supermig and use straight co2 gas as its only £12 for a big bottle. Try going on http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/index.php if you click on home theres loads of good tutorials on welding.

Agree with the above, the better a set is the better it will be to learn on.
I've known people to give up with sacks of crap sets.
Get the best one you can.
Respect to anyone that has one, but I'd advise not to get a sip, if you want the cheaper end then a clarke may be the way to go.
Theres a guy on eblag in rochdale, he sells proper argo shield in non rental bottles like c02, and he's cheap, get some of that its good stuff, c02 is ok but argo is better.

well as you can see from my picture downloads i have a lot of welding to do unless i get another bulkhead, the problem with spending a lot of money on buying one (my dad always said get the best you can) is if i am crap at it, or its just not for me and rather get someone else - so a cheap one of fleabay was my idea - getting a welding master class from nrgserv (not sure he knows what he let himself in for lol) and having a bash at it myself.... the other alternative is to hire one for a weekend or week or month or year...........

i have stated somewhere that i'm not a welder!
it'll be a "this is how i use my equipment" and "i'm willing to show you before you spend money on your own" type of thing.

yes i have seen what i've let myself in for, and at the mo the only thing that concerns me is the pressings around the front vents.
another bulkhead would certainly be the easier and posibly cheaper, and definately quicker way to go, but as i said, i will keep my word if you want help repairing that thing you have that resembles a seive.....

still not heard about the other bulkhead. i will keep pressing him, another thought that i had (and i dont have many) would it be possible as apart from the footwells everything seems to be sound enough (bit of patching etc) could the top part of a good one be chopped and then welded to mine??? thus avoiding the vent problem. the other alternative as i can see is to the repair bracket (under windscreen) fixed either side then a full piece attached to that thus taking out the vents altogether..... or cutting flat vents or something similar.... i dont know - still trying to take it all apart at the moment and cleaning things up and making lists of what i going to need. think i need a holiday....

cheers, long as that last bits understood (mainly by everyone else reading this, as if the original gets repaired their gonna want pics!)

chopping out and replacing from a donor bulkhead is an option, depends on what can be found salvagable elsewhere. (that has the bits you need and the rest is shagged)

if your not particular about originality, then yes, anythings possible.

If you do not fancy the welding all hard work with this job is the removal of the old bits[small grinder a must]and the cleaning up and fitting of the new parts.Do this yourself and save much dosh.Have a welder do his bit[wont take long if you have cleaned up all the joints],pop rivits can hold it all together until its welded.Get out the paint brush and jobs a good one.

i am looking on ebay for one - but due to a golfing holiday coming up money is tight at present. but i will keep looking and asking advice on ones that i find...
plus i agree with ngs, knowing someone able and willing is a must.....

Have a chat with your local car accessory supplier - they usually have cards around for mobile welders if you can't find a member close to you. If you see another series in your area - knock on the door and ask if they know anyone - they probably know how to themselves! Friend made.

You really will benefit from learning, no end! Land rover ownership involves quite a bit of welding:D

Good luck, hope you get it sorted out.

clark 150 turbo i've got. a year later and people come to me for welding!
