As a new owner of the Freelander 2 I have been reading the manual about the Terrain Response selection modes. Can anyone confirm whether the basic setting (General Response mode) is just front wheel drive only with no 4-wheel traction at any time whilst in this mode. The User Manual description seems to be rather vague on this.

No it's 4wd on demand

Basically the terrain response alters the response times and how much 4wd is added

Leaving it in "general" will give you mainly front wheel drive with rear wheels added as necessary

When pulling off from traffic lights then it preloads the rear wheels to give extra traction

What TD4 said.

But having used Freelanders 2's a lot (occasionally using Terrain Response, but almost always in "general" mode), two of them wore the front an rear tyres out at exactly the same rate, while the 2nd one wore its front tyres our just like any FWD car would, leaving the rears to last at least twice as long....

Go figure?!

Just read this interesting thread. I used the terrain response mode for the first time today. Can anyone explain how they work in more detail, please?
