Alarm/immobiliser not arming?

Hi. New member here. Picked up a 2001 Disco 2 GS last night (first Disco I've owned) - so far, so good! Apart from one little thing that I've noticed ...

Both key fobs work perfectly well to lock/unlock the vehicle, but when I lock it I don't think the alarm and immobiliser are arming properly (I don't get the three indicator flashes that I believe I should see, and the LED on the dash doesn't start flashing). When I unlock the vehicle again, though, the indicators do give one flash, which I understand to be the signal that the alarm is disarmed. When I lock it with the key in the driver's door (which, if I understand correctly, should arm everything apart from the interior movement sensors), the indicators give a single flash (which I understand is correct), but the dash LED doesn't start flashing.

I got my other 'arf to sit in the vehicle last night and wave her arms about after I locked it with the fob, which should've set the alarm off - but nothing

.

So - anyone got any ideas what might be causing the alarm to not arm itself properly?

Sorry to be jumping straight in with a question!

Go to 'Introduce Yourself' section and get that bit out the way before you get roasted ...

Do you get any 'flashes'?

Have you checked that the sensors are plugged in or even the alarm has not been disconnected, (usually coz it dunt work proper)...

On it!

As in indicators, you mean? Not when I lock it with the fob - but one flash when I unlock. Also, one flash when I lock with the key in the door. No flashing at all from the LED on the dash.

No - mainly because I'm not sure where to look! Never owned a Disco before (moved over from a Volvo V70), so it's all a bit new to me. I'm an electrician by trade (the theatrical kind, so not a 'proper' one ;)) so I can handle the electrical side of things as long as it doesn't get too complicated. Not so good on the mechanical stuff, though - but learning!! If someone can guide me towards what I should be checking, that would be ace.

Thanks for replying.

When you lock with key fob button indicators flash 3 times, red light at the bottom of the speedometer flashes fast then will continue flashing slowly indicating alarm is set. Mine is 2003 disco.

Well, yeah, but that's just it - mine doesn't. The little LED on the key fob lights, and all the doors lock, but nothing else. The indicators do flash once when unlocking, though. I'm hoping someone might be able to point me towards a few simple things to check before I find somewhere that can plug it into diagnostics and read any codes which might give a clue as to what's going on.

Have a look to see if the siren has been unplugged - it's under the bonnet, behind the battery, a black box thing -

they get unplugged when they won't shut up - but then you need to find out why?

Have a look and get back to us ...and as has been said, tell us where in the world you are, and someone may be close enough to have a looky... :D

Will check that out in a bit. What I have just noticed is that the motion sensor on the driver's side C-pillar (the one that covers the boot space) looks like it's had a bit of a knock on the rear-facing sensor at some point - if that sensor was damaged, would that be enough to stop the ECU from arming the alarm?

Thanks for all the replies so far.

(I'm in north-east Wales, by the way, halfway between Chester and Mold.)

before you eat your mind searching faults you MUST plug in a dedicated tester to see the settings...cos there are settings when the LED and the indicators are resting while the alarm is armed/disarmed...if the settings are OK IMO you have a problem within the BCU and it becomes more complicated...you could check for water ingress/corrosion at the BCU's plugs cos it's quite common(the BCU is behind the glovebox)

Thanks to everyone for their input so far. I'm going to take it to someone nearby who can plug it into diagnostics and see what's going on. I live pretty close to Landranger Deeside 4x4, who I believe are a good bunch so I might pop it over there this week for them to take a look. Is there anyone else around the Chester/Mold/Wrexham area who people would recommend as a good independent LR specialist?

All sorted. Found a friendly local Nanocom owner, discovered that for some reason the alarm/immobiliser had been disabled in the past, re-enabled everything, and all is now well :)
