Alarm/central locking dicovery td5 2000

Hi All

PIcked up a TD5 Discovery XS 2000 just before Christmas. Hope someone may have answer to the following. Alarm/central locking works fine off the key doing all function meant to, but if left locked overnight, in the morning it will not unlock off the key fob, but you have to use the key manually in the lock to open doors. It will then work fine off the key fob for the rest of the day. Is this how they should work or if something wrong, anybody have any idea?

Could not find anything in previous threads.

Hope someone can help.

Am I right in saying that you keep your keys in your pocket during the day and in your front/back door when at home?

If yes then try changing the battery in the fob. Whe it is in your pocket it stays warm. When in your door it gets cold. Once you have warmed it back up it works.

Wow, fast reply!! YOu would be right about were keep the keys! Just off out so will pick up new batteries and see if that fixes it. Fingers crossed and thanks for the super quick reply!

We do our best.

Mine was doing the same and was sorted by a new battery.

Thanks for the suggestion Ratty , but still have the same issue this morning. At least the range of the key fob has improved! Will try another search on internet to see if shed any light on problem. Many thanks for the suggestion..

Is there any noise from the locks or indicators flashing when you hit the button or is it as if the fob doesn't do anything?

Just does nothing. seems really strange that as soon as opened up manually with the key it works no problem off the key fob, doing the dead lock and headlights on to see you in the house. perhaps like me and takes a while to get going in the morning!

I was just wondering if the lock actuator was stiff on the drivers door and preventing it from opening but you've just ruled that one out. :confused2:

It's almost like it is forgetting the plip until it gets close to the ignition barrel. When it does it next, try pressing the buttons alternating from one to the other to try and resynch the fob. If it doesn't do it within half a dozen presses of each button then use the key as you have been doing so far.

Let us know what happens.

thanks for your perseverence Ratty! Tried the button pressing with no joy. JUst seems really strange that once door lock opened manually the fob works fine. do not need to turn ignition on for it to start working. once unlocked with key can press the fob buttons and it works perfect! would make more sense if didnt work period! will have to start timing how long it takes from locking to fob not working....or perhaps learn to live with it!! thanks again.

Do you have more than one fob? It might be worth having a go with another fob.

Failing that if you're near a main dealer it might be worth slipping it in the conversation. They might know of a common fault with it.

I'll ask my mate who works for landrover assistance when I see him next.

Lucky enough to have the two fobs with it, and both the same. i find electrical issues the most frustrating as so difficult to pin point the issue. These website forums are life savers with people like yourself able to offer good advise. Have an Alfa Romeo that the central locking stopped working and the cure was to disconnect the battery leave off for 20 odd minutes and then reconnect and leave key turned on in position 1 for so long, then turn key to start. (something like that i seem to recall) this procedure reset the ecu, and hey presto central locking worked! seemed and ecu reset was a cure to lots of problems!

If your friend can shed any light on the issue, much appreciated. Have to say it seems like this website/forum will make ownership of the discovery alot easier and save money! Perfect.

I have had the same problem with My disco x plate 2000, alarm going to sleep over night exactly as you describe.

The remedy I have found to the problem is a Technical bullet in on the rave CD. This was backed up by Land rover.

the reciever in the roof by the rear sunroof mechanism, on the left hand side of the vehicle, can become lazy and go to sleep, to remedy this you need to replace it, about £40 quid from landrover, I have just replaced mine this afternoon, and i am looking forward with interest tomorrow morning to see if this solves the problem....lets hope so!!!

Well that seems to be the whats happening. Just went outside to see if was still functioning having been left for 8 hours....and was. Shows what rubbish was on tv! look fwd to seeing if the cure. cheers

Well it appears that we have a success story brewing.........

It unlocked first thing this morning no problem!!

Will monitor over the next few days, but we could have a winner here!!!

Will dig the part number out later if that helps and post up!!

Locked at 4:30opm tues evening, unlocked at 09:30 Weds AM no problem.....think we'll class that as sorted now!!!!!

Just saw this fred. Looks like you have it sorted, but in case anyone else is having trouble:

The handset has a little red light that flashes when you press the buttons. If the light does not flash, the problem is the handset (both of mine have given problems). If the light flashes it's either the car system or the synchronisation.

Spotted your thread while looking for help on changing the fob battery. Mine did exactly the same as you describe. Have to open doors with key but remote works thereafter. I changed the battery at a dealers and it was the same. Turns out the fob had corrosion inside which imitated a low battery. Give it a wee clean out with electrical cleaner and try again with your new battery.

Apparently this problem can also occur when a non-original key has been paired up with your ignition after the original one was lost.....

I too have this issue, it appears that about 10hrs was the 'magical' length for mine to go to sleep. If I am home late and head off early in the morning, all works fine, but once it has been parked up for about 10hrs, it is back to unlocking with the key. Might look into changing the receiver, after I give the key a bit of a clean out.
