Alarm - battery disconnect

Can anyone tell me if i leave the keys in the ignition while disconnecting the battery will this prevent the alarm from going off ?

No. Turning the alarm off before disconnecting the battery will prevent it going off.

If you have a battery backup sounder then turn the starter switch 'on' and 'off' and remove the key and then disconnect the vehicle battery within 15 seconds.

But with a 1996 vehicle it is unlikey the sounder battery now 12+ years old still has a charge unless it's be replaced in the last few years.
