Air filter issue 300TDI

Hi... My daughter is running an older P reg 300TDI that seems to be sucking holes in the air filter. Has anyone come across this or have advice on what to look at?

1. Cheap air filters;

2. Air filter paper getting wet and falling apart;

3. Improper installation

4. The air inlet in the airbox is blocked.

5. Very old air filter?

Can't think of any others to be honest.

is water getting into the airbox and soaking the paper element? its only damp or wet filters I have seen get sucked up.

Have you just noticed it? or has it done it more than once, if you opened it and discovered a hole in the filter then it's just bloody filthy and needs burnt and replaced with a new one!
