Hello All

I have trudged through looking for info on The workings of Air con
I just got my 2003 td5 re gassed at LR Indy and they said everything was fine except the fan has seized that's why it's not working
So I am trying to find out should the Air con work or not with the buggered fan?
The guy said it probably seized because it only comes on at 25 deg outside temp?
So I am confused
As always any help appreciated

Hi, if everything else is OK the aircon must start working without that fan... it's a helper not a vital part of the system...only if the temp. is above 28*C and the fan is seized the dual pressure switch will stop the compressor to protect the system when the pressure grows above 32 bar due to lack of condenser cooling....but will start again when it drops under 26 bar

IMO those guys have no idea about how the D2's aircon must work.... what's going on? ..what's the symptom of yours?

It started to blow warm air so I thought get them to look over it and that was there findings the fan seized one pipe is freezing and the other is hot so I assume it is working but nothing cold in the cabin just cool air in a mild day and warm air in a cold day ??

find somebody who knows what he's doing then... by the way you didnt set in on 'ECON' i hope, cos then the compressor clutch is disengaged

The condenser fans are open frame and get all the cr*p off the road in the internals.

Replacements on ebay work well but just the same construction.

Philip had to modify his mountings slightly to fit his.

Ha ha no the ECON never goes on
Peter do you know what ones are on flea bay?
Also I looked at getting the old one off the bolts are rusted to hell so I might have to break the plastic lugs off the fan housing
But it still doesn't answer why it's not getting cold in the cab
Oh Landrovers it's a life's choice :)

the fan had seized on mine when i got it, i replaced it with a rad cooling fan from a toyota surf my mate was scrapping, works realy well, just needed a few mods to get it to fit.

Quick question Lads
Should you notice a change in engine revs when you switch between aircon and ECON ?
Sorry for the stupid questions
This modern tech has me baffled :-(

One of these, I think we bought a 10", but it's on Philip's car as I don't have aircon.

Did they just re-gas the system or did they pressure test it.
Disco II's are notorious for a chaffed pipe which runs through the body to the left of the nearside headlight. There is a P clip which holds it too rigid and vibration causes the pipe to rub and hole.
I have run mine (after replacing the pipe) with a seized fan for years, I did replace the fan with a 2nd hand one before but a few years later this also seized.

Kwik Fit used to do an Air Con service where you didn't pay if they couldn't lower the temp by a certain value, dont know if this is still the case.

Hi biggeeeee
They pressure tested the system (took them about 30 mins) then ran the car and plugged it back in to check
I now think it could be the clutch not engaging
Will check this tonight
Thanks

And did your air con work before you fitted the Toyota fan?

no it didnt, but ive slowly been replacing bits to get it going again, sunlight sensor on the dash has been done as it was faulty, ive now got power to evrey thing but the compessor still wont kick in,i just need to get it pressure tested and regassed to see if it works.

If one pipe is hot and the other freezing, the aircon is working and your problem is with the temperature control flap in the heater. I don't know the disco, but blend motor failure is a common problem on the P38.

yes you should but not much...also if you watch the compressor clutch while somebody switches the aircon on you should see it engaging

the fans are usually seized to see if it's management issue or other thing first check if the fan and clutch are in working order or not for that remove relay R4 and put a bridge instead terminals 30 - 87 for the fan and the same trick with relay R11 (compressor clutch) ... if they work this way we'll speak then...by the way did you run the manual diagnostic procedure on the system? Well diagnostic done with no faults
Not sure what you mean about bridging the compressor clutch relay :-(
The saga continues
