Been searching on autotrader for the last few days and found 5 TDi's all below £1000 within a reasonable distance from me. I don't want to waste time running around looking at unsuitable vehicles.

Which of these would you consider worthwhile looking at?

Auto Trader UK - LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2.5 Td5 Adventurer 7 Seat 5dr Diesel Sw

Auto Trader UK - LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2.5 Turbo Diesel TDi

Auto Trader UK - LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 300 Tdi 5dr Diesel Station Wagon

Your help and advice will be appreciated, I am getting impatient but I don't want to impulse buy something I will later regret.

Thanks.

Stu

Well the TD5 didn't come out til 98 So Number 1 is a no no. He dosen't even know what it is he's selling..

You don't want anything pre 95 as they'll be rotten and on there last legs. unless you can get them for less than £500. so the last one is probably your best bet Oh and it's a 300tdi at that year.

Thanks for having a look for me, down to 4 now cus 1 of them seems to have vanished off autotraders website!!

Stu

Number 3 sounds good, 178k is big mileage but if its been well maintained it shouldn't be a problem.
Remember to check for rust

Reddys right, the last one has a good MOT & some service history, it's the first one I'd have a look at.

First & formost YOU need to starting looking a lots of Discos yourself so that you can learn what's important and what's not.

Don't be lazy, get out there and start looking.

Not being lazy thank you very much!!!! I have looked at about 20 to 30 discos in my local area, mostly seemed overpriced. As the one's listed above were mostly a distance away from my home I thought I would ask the opinion of the guys on here before driving several hundred miles to look at 5 or 6.
I thought that was the idea behind this type of forum, to offer advice/tips/support etc to other people who share the same interests.

The idea of forums of any kind is to give people the opportunity of sharing, ideas, advice, whatever.

The fact that you have already looked at 20 - 30 Disco's and not formed sufficient ideas in your own head so that you can make a decision to go and look at some more, albeit at a distance, compounds the unneccesary nature of your question.

Most people when asking this type of question don't know what to look for as they are not familiar with the vehicle. As you have looked at lots, shouldn't you be able to decide for yourself rather than asking someone else to hold your hand.

Grow up;)

All I wanted was some advice, just because I have looked at lots of a particular car does not make me an expert on them. I am most certainly not looking for someone to hold my hand and I find your comments extremely unneccessary.
I hope one day when you need advice on a subject you are unfamiliar with you meet someone as unhelpful as yourself. If you are here just to start an argument with a newbie to the land rover world then please don't even bother to read or respond to my threads as I have no interest in speaking to someone like you. Other people have offered advice without resorting to insults.

Not quite actually.

You are not asking for advice, you are asking someone to help you make up your mind about what to do.

Can you not see how inapprpriate your question was - "please have a look at these adverts/pictures and tell me which one I should go and see"

You have a budget of £1000, that means that you will be buying something probably in the order of 10 - 15 yrs old and yet you are asking the forum members to guide you on the basis on an advert??

You don't even give any buying criteria on which the members could say "as you are looking for one to do such & such a job, or with a specific feature such as an autobox for example, I would suggest no.2"

Your question is wide without any APPARENT thought to it.

You have looked at a significant number of vehicles and yet you don't appear to have learnt enough to at least prioritise.

Buying older vehicles is a bit of a lottery where the odds against you are stacked, only by viewing them will you even the odds a bit.

All I'm saying is, give us a chance to help you and we will, but please don't ask such open-ended questions.

For example, no.1 has very knobbly tyres for going off-road - is that what you want to do?, because IF you don't, they can be noisy and slippy on-road and potentially a disadvantage.

I am not being rude to you, I'm just asking you to think, before you type - that's all.

Good luck in your hunt

Dave

Sorry you've ended up feeling insulted. For what it's worth, I think at this budget you're doing the right thing by looking carefully & asking lots of questions especially if you're not in any hurry. In the past I've often left it till my car dies before getting another & this is when you can end up rushing in & buying a lemon. When you do find a good car you will know by all your previous viewings. Good luck.

right first up i would get a copy of this months LRO it has a used landy buying guide with the thigs to look out for, when you go and look at them the main areas too look at are the rear floor, the rear seatbelt mounts and the body mounts as these are the most likely spots for serious rot when looking at a used car over 15years old i don't take into account service history as appert from cam belt changes and oil changes it tells you nothing about the car even then it doesn't mean it has been done it just means someone has stamped the book!

take a jack with you, jack it up and check the bearings, swivel play and brakes for binding, once its back on the floor slide under it and have a good ook at the body mounts take a small ball pien hammer with you little taps of the area will tel you if its rotten because big lumps of rust will fall away, open the back door does it catch on the bumper? of it does it will either be the rear body has dropped or the bottom door hinge is attached to thin air, now lift the rear carpet have a poke at the floor along the creases if its rotten it'l cost you about £400 to have a body shop fix it!
now open both rear passenger doors grab the seat belt and give it a good hard tug if it moves at the mounting point on the floor(wheel arch) its rotten and will let go in a crash

thats some starters for you

The thing is, he's not asking lots of questions.

If, for example, he were to say, "what do people think about the Tdi200 versus the Tdi 300 in terms of reliability" I would have absolutely no problems with answering him at length, giving as much as I have found with our two, but he doesn't.

Very good advice, particularly taking the jack to check bearings, I never thought of that - excellent:D ;)

I still disagree to an extent, maybe I wasn't quite clear enough about what I wanted but I am most certainly not asking for someone to guide me and make my decision for me. All I need is a vehicle for general road use and was merely asking for opinions of the one's advertised based on peoples knowledge of the models, engines and bodywork for the years in question.
Secondly I don't have a budget of just £1000 I can pay more if needed but I wasn't sure if these models represented good value for money or if I should just throw my money down the toilet. I do only want an older vehicle as I have had newer vehicles in the past and experienced just as many problems as with an old banger so why should I pay £10000 for a car for it to cost me several hundred pounds in repair bills the moment any warranty is up, I'd much rather spend £1-2000 on a vehicle.
As for buying criteria, I have already stated that I am not looking for someone to help me buy a car, I just want some opinions about the models and prices for the year. Then I can make a decision whether or not it is worth my while going to look at them.
Maybe you have money to burn, I on the other hand am very careful about larger purchases.

@ G-man, thanks for the advice. These are the sort of answers I would hope for. I will probably have to take someone else along for this as I am not really mechanically minded. (I can just about find my way round a spark plug).
