Hi. Have just joined this site - seems to bo the most useful one that I have found. Have recently bought myself a V8 Defender 110 and want to know where I can find the VIN or equivalent on the chassis which ties it to the log book. I'm sure all you landy folk are rooling your eyes and tutting, but we all have to start somewhere.....:confused2:

Hi. Have seen that plate - is actually on the brake servo mounting. I want to know if there is any ID on the chassis. I suppose I want to know, in a nutshell, if the log book relates to the chassis or the body? If you change/swap the chassis, which part does the log book relate to? Does that make sense?

Having read through some more threads, I think I have answered my own question - the log book relates to the chassis, not the body. I still dont know where to find the ID number on the chassis which relates it with the log book tho.

The VIn number is stamped into the chassis. Front drivers corner, front of the rail, on the d rivers side verticle panel - near where the tie down eye bolts on.

The VIN number relates to the vehicle - it is convenient to put it on a chassis.

However, if you use an old chassis and put new engine, gearbox, axles, body, interior, bulkhead, etc, then you will need to inform the DVLA who will issue a Q plate.

Or, conversly, if you rechassis your LR, then you should tell the DVLA.

Or, just stamp the old chassis number onto the new one yourself. :)

or if youve nicked or got a stolen land rover then it is useful to know where ALL identifying numbers are so they can be welded over, ground down then restamped ! a land rover forum is the perfect place to find out as may people will be able to give this information out to some one claiming to want to be able to identify a vehicle with the log book.

alternativly phone the police and they will send a vehicle examiner to check the vehicle if there is any doubt to its authenticity.

no person or persons are being accused of any offence, and are presumed innocent untill proven guilty in a court of law.:D 'cops'

Where LR stamps their chassis numbers is hardly a secret.

Besides, if hes gone to the effort of nicking one, im sure he should know where the numbers are.

That or hes a ****E car ringererer.

no ones been accused of any such thing ! im shocked you would think that ! i have known a few dodgy car handlers who didnt know a lot of the places for id tags and numbers ect on cars so it wouldnt be hard to imagine some one asking a question on a forum such as this to find out if there are any places other than the usual ones where id stamps might be hiding. a lot of fords had a steel 'tag' on the bottom of the front valence which was just a lot of rectangle 'holes' it was infact a barcode to id the car.
JCB have almost every large part stamped with the serial numbers of the machine. i think it was audi that had codes stamped in the boot compartment ? lots of cars have id codes on them that are not common knowlege.

My 110 chassis ID is on top of the nearside front outrigger support under the nearside front door, the bit that comes off the back of the rigger and back to the chassis as a bracing piece.:)

you cant slate the fella can you , everyone got to start some where and with the economic climate the last thing he needs is a wrong un . having some one taking your money , then you having the car taken off him by the law , . aint no fun

Whoa boys!! I think my question is being blown out of all proportion. I have a defender with a knackered chassis and I can't afford a new one so was hoping to buy second hand if pos. Initially didnt know if the log book relates to the body or chassis, then just wanted to know how I can verify the paperwork against the metalwork - IF I buy one.
If I had a nicked vehicle, I certainly wouldnt be trying to cover my tracks by asking questions on a public domain like this one.
Sorry if I rattled anyones cage but have the info I wanted now so thanks for that.

Sorry, just pasted the wrong stuff in the reply window - trying to watch TV and surf dont work
Dare I risk another question under the circumstances? IF I buy a secondhand chassis, how much difference is there between the different models of defender 110s. Mine is a V8 so could I adapt a diesel chassis?

hehehhe no cages rattled and no accusations thrown. i was just offering a different perspective on the issue.
any ways ignore me im a pr*ck :D
