Hi all
I am currently looking at buying another defender (my second)
My first was a 200 tdi truck cab. But always wanted a v8.
Im after something to us at the weekends for green laning and the odd pay and play.
Like I said would love a v8 but was worried about reliablity, especially if i was to do any wading at pay and plays.
So wondered what you guys recommend?

Thanks in advance.

aarr well. i think a straight piped 2/300 tdi it is then :D
plus ive read the v8 are unreliable. i.e overheat easily.
haha its just so i have the ability too drive it in water.

If noise isn't a worry and your only using on weekends then I'd get a 200tdi, TD5's are too complicated, 300tdi are quieter than a 200tdi, but my dads fixed a few of both and the 200tdi seems to be the most bombproof, and as stated above if you want a v8 then keep it away from water, hope this helps btw never had any experience with the PUMA engines because I've never wanted to :D

Yer too right we will Dr evil. Cheers Dave. Didn't know the 200 was louder so thanks. Tbh I'm after a noisey thing. :p yer I'd avoid the newer engines as they are too electronic and too pricey for me.

Yeah 200tdi are more of a tractor engine than the 300tdi, but they look very similar, the gearboxes are different, 200tdi has an LT77 (reverse top left) 300tdi has an R380 (reverse bottom right) :D

Been reading up and its debated which engine is better. But the 200 seems to get the vote. Also from what I have read the 300 gearbox is stronger and better?

That was the idea, but as far as my dad has found the only advantage to it is reverse is easier to engage :D but then others might have found that their better

oh right fair enough i had a disco 2oo in my last defender and found it brill. but tbh ill get whatever comes up in my price range and is well kept. lol

Yeah, we have bought a few 200tdi disco's that were MOT failures and we just yank the engines out and scrap the rest, going back we should have taken the axels off, calipers and axles are bloody handy :D but 200tdi's are very rare now, most have been scraped and the engines in defender, we also have a 300tdi out of a disco waiting for someone to want a transplant :biggrin1:
