We have decided that we want a Defender 110 Station Wagon with 12 seats as our first Landy. Been dying to have one since I could first drive.

Are there any problems we should look for when choosing one?

Just gone to view a 1998 County 110 with a 300TDi engine. Is this a good engine? Not sure the price is right at £5995 with 163,000 on the clock though. No obvious rust except on the side steps and engine sounded good but I have dodgy hearing so who knows?

Kids loved it though and asked if we could swap it there and then.

This has been covered many many times, use the search function to look for buying inspection lists and try and take someone with you who knows deependers. Good luck.

welcome to Landyzone,
Chassis
Rear of chassis especially,
Bulkhead,
Any part that is steel,

Erm engines check to see when the cambelt was done, if unknown get it done asap!
Gearbox xheck lowrange and difflock, check UJ's etc i tend to go and find loads of problems to get the price down a bit. Jai

What are UJs?

Going through the forums, 300TDi have better mpg than TD5 right?

How is the Tdi on vege oil instead of diesel?

UJ's = Universal Joints (the joints on the prop shaft)

300tdi's are generally cheaper and easier to maintain and have better fuel economy.

TD5's are more refined, have more get up and go but may need disgnostic equipment to help fix faults.

300tdi's are fine with veg oil, TD5's aren't.

I gave £9500 for 2000 12 seater with genuine 24k miles.
Don't know if it was too much or not but she was certainly clean all over.
Best car I've driven!!!!

question must be asked tho if it concerns you how mich MPG you get then a landy probably isnt your best bet. A well looked maintained and looked after landy will repay you in faultless reliability. One that isnt could cost you everything you own!

I gave £3500 for my ex electricity board 1999 TD5 110 csw with 130k on the clock.

It looks better than my CR-V which gets a measly 20-25mpg at the moment. Any car that I get that will accomodate 3 kids and a dog plus piles of paraphanelia will not have fantastic mpg (mind you we are tempted to get a 2 seater when they start arguing). But again, a penny saved......

you can expect 25-30mpg from a 300tdi or TD5. Some 300tdi's can get up to 35mpg.

Hoonda CRVs drink fuel like nobodys buisness we have one at work and its really bad on fuel. Fair enough 300tdi is pretty darn good. Im not a fan of TD5's multilayered clutches cos they have 5 cylinders, too much electronics for me personally, (I trained on electronics) bolt in the oil pump missing its locktite, ecu loom getting oil into it. leaking o rings warped/cracked head etc etc. There are plus points a good one will be more car like than any pre td5 engine LR. better fuel economy and newer. I'd rarther stick to the 300tdi its a good all rounder and simple to work on IMO.
