advice needed on a serengeti

hi Im new,
long story,
we used to have an 02 serengeti 3 door from new, we only had it for two years as we had twin girls and needed something bigger for boot space , and at the time I couldnt drive...so never got the chance to have a go of it.....and we sold it.....
I am about to go and see an 02 serengeti exactly the same, tomorrow (saturday).
it has done 50000 miles, had head gasket done already and cam belt, and just had a full service,
the only advisry on the last MOT was that the heat shield ? on the exhaust was rusted ??

can anyone tell me what I should look at when I go to see it, as cars aint my thing.
also can anyone tell me what the colour of the landy in the pic is, as thats the colour we had, and the same colur as the one we are going to look at...the one in the pic isnt the car we are going to see.

Diesel or preferably a Disco, Petrol freelanders are legendary in there unreliability
 
Head gasket failures/loose liners/dropped liners/tipped liners. Regular sequential head gasket failure.

Both 1.8 and V6, trust me on this if you must buy freelander. L series or TD4

I recently brought a freelander 3 door TD4 2005. Quite nice for a first car. (was aiming for a defender, but none where available in the area) There just covered my back :D

But on a serious note. Just take care and take all the usually steps. Beware of any super-clean engines. They may be clean for a reason. Just take a hand to the oil filler cap and dipstick and look for any white substances as this could indicate faults (Please correct me with this if I'm wrong I'm just trying to reel stuff out)

Take a look under the car and check for any severe rusting or damage. The freelanders where usually quite good in this department, but its worth checking. Also the rear drum brakes can suffer some corrosion, just take a look and if its within reason (So a bit of rust but not too much) it should be fine. I was advised by a mechanic to take a look at the suspension as well.

Check to see if the car has a tow bar, this may show that the car has been towing at one point in its life and you should pay particular attention to the gearbox when taking it for a drive. Heavy gears and a reluctance to engage will sound alarm bells.

In my opinion the petrol cars should never be touched, head gasket problems can rear their heads at almost any opportunity. And its a very costly repair. Yes Diesels cost more but its because they are soo much more "reliable" than their brothers.

Just a word of warning. When i was looking i did find a car that looked "ok" on top when on further inspection the underside of the car was completely shot, rust holes everywhere. Looking inside the car i found the last service report (under the rear seat) which recommended and i'm not joking - New Gearbox, Clutch with master and slave cylinders, new rear drum brakes and rear suspension springs. Needless to say i was left that garage very quickly.

I have just missed out on a freelander 04 sport, but have just seen another one, but its as below..
2006 LAND ROVER FREELANDER 2.0 Td4 Sport Hardback 3dr with 88000 miles on the clock, whats this like for the milage on a freelander ? is it good, or should I be looking for lower to avoid any problems / expence.

You have twins.I sat in 3dr freelander many years before i bought one.The space between the rear seats and tailgate made me think it was a totally impractical car,that was also long before i had kids of my own.I am probably wrong but I think the 3dr only has 4 seatbelts,someone correct me please.

thats the reason we sold our old serengeti,
we have a grand scenic for the wife and girls, the freelander would just be a run a round daily for me :)
beats a P reg fiesta which leaks in the rain etc, which I have now, with no heating :D
 
cheers peeps...just bought an 06 sport td4, not a mark on it, or in it.
heated seats, parking sensors, electric folding mirrors, blue tooth, privacy glass, the works, and just ordered £800 worth of goodies for it :D:D

Should've saved £250 of the £800 goodie pot for a roverron synergy & egr bypass, well worth the money.
Don't forget to change your crankcase breather asap.

Enjoy your car, they are a nice drive.

being totally stupid on these things...what is it, and why does it need to be repalced ?

OH...and can it be done yourself for a non mechanical type of person.........:eek: and is it easy....
