Advice needed - garage or mechanic in Aberdeenshire

I have a 1990 Defender 2.5Td which is need of tlc. There are a number of oil seals which need to be placed in the transfer box and differentials. There is a fuel leak and significant back pressure in the fuel system caused I assume by a faulty turbo.

I have made 4 visits to the local garage (spent £££!) and no closer to getting things fixed.

Can anyone suggest a good reliable experienced and honest garage who could help? Happy to travel a bit. And am located 15 miles north west of Aberdeen.

Would really like to get my Defender sorted but am thinking of selling because I cannot these issues resolved.


Any help or advice?

Hi Sean,
It's general forum etiquette to introduce yourself on any forum first, before joining the conversation and asking a question. I would go HERE and do a brief intro. Read through a few first if need be. You'll get a much better response then. Someone may recommend a place near you, but be aware that people can be a bit reserved about recommending places in case things go wrong.
However, if you give further details about the leaks and the fuel back pressure problem then there are many experienced people on here who will be able to advise. If you aren't going to do it yourself, then at least you'll know a lot more about the problems when you next talk to a garage/mechanic. What are your fuel back pressure symptoms?

Interesting problem you appear to have ;). LR's of that period are simple, and pretty easy to work on and DIY.... Post some more info when you can and we'll try to help you understand the issues, and possibly fix them... :)

( and the intro is a good thing to do - with it a few piccies if possible - we likes piccies !! )
 
Thanks for the replies - I appreciate the welcome and helpful advice.

I have various oil leaks which I think (at this stage!) should be a straight forward fix.

The issue which is causing problems in back pressure in the fuel system. When I open the fuel filler cap after driving there is a significant release of pressure - even to point of forcing fuel out. This also appears to have caused a fuel leak which fitting a new fuel tank and seals has not cured. The local garage cannot identify the problem and the local independent Land Rover garage say they have never seen this before and it could be very expensive trying to find out what is going wrong.

I am on a limited budget and cannot keep throwing money at the problem. I also have very limited mechanical skills and recognise the time has to come to learn!

The engine is an old 2.5 TD with 104k on the clock but starts on the button and pulls well. I also got the garage to do the MOT emissions test which is passed with flying colours.

Forgot to add the local independent specialist suggested it could be either the fuel pump or turbo

Any suggestions?

I can't see how the turbo could be pressurising the fuel tank. Are you sure it is pressurising and pushing fuel out, not creating a vacuum and sucking air in when you open the cap?
 
I've not heard of a fuel pump pressurising a tank. If it's pulling well the fuel injection pump must be getting a good supply of fuel, so it would seem strange if that was pushing in the opposite direction to pressure the tank. Does this happen with the tank is at different levels? ie only when full or close to empty etc.
 
Thanks - have tried new fuel cap and also had a replacement fuel tank and seals fitted. Neither of these have solved the problem!

It appears very difficult to find the source of the fuel leak - the rear side and underneath the tank are wet with fuel and the fuel line also appears wet.

I think the back pressure is forcing fuel out of the system and I wonder if the new fuel tank has been compromised by the back pressure.

Try reading this LINKY if the tank is breathing properly you won't get pressure either way.
Sometimes, things that are replaced are faulty from the start.
