Hello,

I've just been reading through another topic regarding power loss on a 200TDi and Trewy suggested that the bloke should check his fuel tank breather. This has interested me:

- How can a blocked fuel tank breather effect power?
- what are the tell tale signs of a blocked fuel tank breather?
- Is the fuel tank breather simply the filler cap?

Thanks

Pretty much pos. If ye look down the filler hole ye'll see a wee hole to one side, that's where the breather ends.
If the breather is blocked then chances are it's creatin' a vacuum type thing and the fuel won't run as it should.

Fuel starvation as a vacume inside the tank reduces the amount of fuel the lift pump can bring up and also draws fuel back from the return pipe, and hence causes the fuel not to flow around the system as well as it should

the main symptom is a woosh of air when you take the filler cap off

Thanks for the explanation :) I'll whip the pipe off and check it tomorrow evening. I have recently replaced the filler neck because the old one had rotten through.

Ta for that. I know for a fact that sometimes it hisses when i take the filler cap off, whether or not its blowing out or sucking in I do not know and it seems to be fine other times. Strange.

Sorry to jump in on ya post Pos!

Im getting a leak of diesel from my filler cap (Seems to slosh out as i find its all run down the side of the landy under the filler cap!)

I was thinking of making the filler cap a better seal (DIY method) but reading ya post this now doesnt seem a good idea? With it being a breather?

Cheers, Scott

Ah had kinda the same problem with diesel comin' out (and the whoosh of air like pos'). Ah stripped and cleaned the cap and it hasn't done it since....

Might be something silly like the wee spring loaded ball bearin' inside it. Becarefull if ye do strip it as there might be two ball bearings;)
