Can anyone help me. I have just bought a 1988 2.5 turbo diesel 110 Defender. The problem I have, is that the engine is in bits in the back as the last owner was informed by a mechanic that the small (Little) end has gone after he had completely stripped it and the previous owner decided not to spend any money on it and left it standing in a yard for 2 years. The bodywork and interior are in excellent condition and it has s**t loads of extras ie. steps, bars, fog lamps etc.

Not being a mechanic myself, My questions are....

1) Rather than replacing this with a recon unit. Is this a fairly easy fix or cheaper repair than replacement? Is it unusual for the small end to go?

2) If it is better to replace with a recon engine, which one and who by (bearing in mind I have limited funds)

3) Does anyone know of a decent and cheapish mechanic that could fix the old engine in essex?

All responses are extremely welcome.

the engine has been sitting in pieces for 2 years, is it all there or have you got a pile of bits that look right but not looked closely, a running 200tdi will set u back £250 - £500

Thanks for all your comments. I spoke with a land rover specialist in Brentwood who quoted me about £1600 to supply and fit a 200 TDi engine...is this a fair price. I assume it includes all relevant parts to fit aswell.

Think about it. How much labour is involved with taking the engine out of a donor vehicle, fitting it into the recipient and sorting all the plumbing etc? They then have to give some sort of guarantee on the work albeit probably a very limited one. Garages have overhead, wages to pay, rent, etc, and they need to make a profit.It isn't like when you do your landy up at home and only count the cost of the parts, taking no account of the hours of labour you've put into it.

:eek::eek:HOW MUCH:eek::eek:

You can buy a reasonable 200tdi Discovery for that, with the engine already in!
ez not rong,iv got gud 200tdi disco fa £750.its mot'd till march.yu cud buy that n use the engine,n still the rest whilst its still got n mot.be loads cheaper than ya mans £1600 quote!!!!

Agree..doesnt mean i think its reasonable though...his engines out already...if you are so inclined you can get a refurbed low mileage 200tdi engine with warranty for £950 off the net...
