Hello Freelander boys.....I have a neighbour who has a 1998 'S' reg td4 freelander, 98K on the clock..

Currently she is parked up.....being nosey I asked him what up...he said he has been the told the head gasket has gone, by the sounds of it across the coolant and exhaust port.

I currently have a Disco...but debating on whether to make him an offer on the freelander and fix her up....

are head gaskets common on the older TD4? anything else need checking, what are the turbo's like (seals?)

The spec level is prettrr low I think, she does not have leather interior and has a hard back...any advice on price for this unit? I do not want to seem insulting to the chap and he just said 'make me an offer....'

Thanks

H

Thanks, really helpful....

just checked Parkers guide, they say it is a td4 although I did read somewhere that some have the Landrover L series engine...just read some more reviews too, I think I will give it a wide birth....

Slob, not code, simply a name for an impreza......enjoy your evening.

Murray,
Hate to say this mate, but Parkers are talkin bollocks...the TD4 didn't come in till 2001, its a BM engine instead of the Rover/(Perkins based?) lump in the early FL's, and 1 1/2-2k shud get you that lump.

PS don't know what reviews yer read, but Tinytdi and me are both running 150k 98 Xedi's . TD4's are'nt short of problems....Have a read of this thread..

Murray - say yu buy this hippoo, replace the hg - wot yu got? a hippo wiv a susceptability to blowin hed gaskits. - Either get it, strip it and build a hybrid out of it - or save ya money.

Hatters,
I'd def agree if this were a 1.8, but I didn't think that HGF was a recurring problem on the desiesels. I know he won't get the overheating problem of the 'k' type anyhows...

yer! soz about that - i see "HGF" on a hippoo - and my eyes all glaze over (maybe its tears - who knows) and I think "****! - another 1.8". the doozils aint too bad - just chuck out the engine oil - but that is one where care and maintenance DO make a difference.

Slob - I know yu dont care fur rice burners - but you ARE the font of all knowledge - aint ya?
