Can someone throw any light on this issue
Range Rover P38 DHSE 2002
Abs Modulator SXC 1000000
My modulator starts making a clunking noise when I am braking very lightly, if I press the brakes harder the noise stops.
I have cleaned out the reservoir which wasn't really dirty and renewed the fluid to no avail. Replaced accumulator to no avail.
Thanks for any help/ideas

there are plastic washer in earlier models that fail, your one has steel washers I believe.

when I bough my repair kit off ozzie guy if I remember correctly there are two parts to a pin assembly and if they get contaminated and scratched you get this effect/as well as plastic washer.

I would see if washer kit available google "range rover brake modulator repair kit"

thanks, done some research on the older type which can fail, as mine is the later type can these fail or can I just put up with the noise

I trust you bled the system according to the proceedure in RAVE? If not there will be air in the modulator.

well have bled the system 3 times (to the manual)
still get the clicking noise when lightly pressing brake pedal, if I press hard it disappears.
Anyway got a second hand modulator, anything I need to be aware of when swapping them over?

Thanks

Quite likely to be the pedal or pedal return spring not the modulator.

Well swapped out the modulator at weekend re bleed and it does exactly the same, quite an annoying ticking noise when lightly pressing the brake pedal, could it be the pressure switch on the pump?

any help appreciated

It could be what you were told it could be at the beginning of this thread.

Hi Wammers

I have bled the system numerous times and brakes are good and firm pedal pressure, its just the annoying noise. do you think I still have air in the modulator?

Thanks

Look in RAVE Manuals -> 70 Brakes-ABS -> Repair -> Brakes bleed system, pages 2 and 3. See Note in bold type at bottom of page 3.

Hi
Yeah ive read that but during the bleeding procedure I can hear the pump running and it is not making a ticking noise, its only when I am driving it does it, if I press the brakes to make the pump come on it doesn't make the noise I can hear, its definitely speed related as the tick/clunk slows as the car slows if you know what I mean.

The ticking noise is from inside the modulator if there is air in it, it is the valves oscillating.

well I finally cured the noise, don't know why but I re bleed the system put mu old modulator back on all to no avail.

replaced the front pads (which were not worn out) and voila no noise.
