LR4 Front Driver Wheel Noise

Trying to figure out what's causing this grinding, squealing, chirp like noise coming from the front driver's side wheel. It usually starts when going between 35-40mph and continues until I go faster than 40mph then stops, starts again between 55-60mph and continues until I go faster than 60mph then stops again. Doesn't matter if I'm accelerating but does stop if I press the brake. Doesn't happen ALL the time but definitely MOST of the time. Didn't start making this noise until after LR Service replaced front and rear brakes including rotors. They say it's not the brakes, they say brakes are good, no glazing, checked for rock or something stuck not that, not the brake pad metal retainer/clip, not wheel bearings....I'm at a loss and apparently my local LR dealer hasn't a clue because THEY say they can't replicate the noise. AND that's because they're located in a very busy part of the city and they drive it with all the traffic noise around them and even when I try to drive it with them, the traffic is too heavy and loud, even if the noise is there, can't hear it. It's driving me crazy because when not in the city, it is REALLY loud as you can hear from the video. Has anyone else ever encountered this noise before and what was it and how did you fix it? Please help!

Hi Grebby, Thank you so much for letting me know I did not post in the correct section. I'm brand new to this and not sure what my problem is (maybe cause I'm from USA?) I can't figure out where to post my question. I will keep trying to find the correct section and please accept my apologies, I didn't intend to create any negative issues, I'm seriously just looking for some help with my 2013 Land Rover LR4 HSE since I'm getting nowhere with my LR dealer.

welcome to the asylum, lol , indeed if u just say hi in the introduce section it just lets us know where ur from and what motor you’ve got

No probs and no need to apologises , easily done when u come onto a new forum , there’s also the discovery section

must confess it sounds like ur brake discs ( rotors ) are warped , so as u drive they touch then don’t touch the pads , ideally u need them to check the run out of the discs to ensure there running straight and true

if that’s ok need to ensure the calliper pistons arnt sticking , just heard warped discs before and sound very similar

hope that helps a little

plus if I may add might be an idea to see if u an find an independent garage unless urs is under warrenty and need the JLR stamp in ur service book

if not would be tempted to get someone else look at it , would be cheaper as well

plse let us know how u get on
 
Also posted ur video for u , indeed the more I listen to it the more I think it’s ur discs ( rotors ) warped

 
Found a video as well explaining the disc run out , hopefully it makes more sense and once again not 100% but personally that’s the only thing I can think of regarding the on/of metallic sound,

plus do u know what make the brake components were plse, don’t know if it’s on ur invoice etc

from around 2.05 mins on the video , hopefully an independent garage will be able to identify the noise for u , also at the same time worth getting checked

Brake calliper pistons arnt sticking
back of brake pads have had copperslip applied
pad shims not touching the discs

also just thought and not wishing to try and teach u how to suck eggs , but after a drive do ur discs feel hot, plse don’t touch the discs but put the back of ur hand a few inches away , ur soon be able to tell if there very hot

Dang. Indy Land Rover mechanics are kinda hard to find around our parts, but gstuart is right. Start there. Most competent garages should know where to start looking if you take it to them and tell them that the brake is noisy and it's hot.

Deffo discs/rotors interference with pads - sound is very metallic - almost like the linings have fallen off the backplate OR the pads are wrong and riding on the centre of the disc OR the pad hardware has been incorrectly fitted and is rubbing..

I'm sorry to say that my opinion of main stealers is very low ... VERY VERY low.. :rolleyes: :mad::mad: - so I second finding a local independent ..

A brake job job is hardly "rocket science" ... :confused:
 
With wheel off and jacked up , I would turn wheel and look / feel for it being tight when turning wheel by hand, to discount the rotors I would (and others might not) clamp flexi with small G clamp , release bleed screw and move brake piston back so there is some clearance between disc and pads , this should remove the suspected cause of noise so as when you brake gently on test run on quiet road it will not move pads on that side of brakes
Note the brakes will pull to right as only offside will be working

many thks as indeed must have listened to the video 2-3 times and couldn’t think of anything else

plus 1 regarding stealers as also never go anywhere near them , wouldn’t be so bad if they were the experts they claim to be , yet in the past on several occasions they’ve seriously dropped the ball

Talking of brakes I’m surprised the amount of times I’ve seen utube videos of so called experts where they don’t even bother applying copperslip / ceramic grease on the back of the pads and wonder why they then squeal

Indeed, , fingers crossed a decent independent should be able to easily diagnose and resolve the issue
