'ABS fault' sign on start up

'ABS fault'. Is it normal for this sign to come up on start up; it goes out every time when the vehicle reaches around 5mph, and never appears when I am driving (1999 P38 DIESEL )

Yes, that is normal. The ABS does a self check each time you start. If it doesn't go off once you're over 5mph it is broken.

Thanks for the reply. I thought it was just the light lit up, not also the 'ABS fault' sign as well; you have reassured me, getting worried as it's mot time soon

If the message is also on the message display....then it could be a weak battery - low volts give all sorts of weird warnings!

It's normal for the ABS light to be on until you go over a certain speed . It's not normal for it the message "ABS fault" to display every time you start it if that's what you are saying.

Make sure the MOT garage knows it is normal as many think is a fault as they don't drive it above the speed needed.
Have also had a garage strip the dash out to try and fix it when it wasn't broken

Sorry, I misunderstood. I assumed it was just the light coming on. A fault on the message centre would be worth investigating.

Yes......

It could be as simple as one of the wheel speed sensors that isn't responding properly as it's either faulty or not pushed in far enough. Diagnostics is the easiest way to find out what it thinks is the problem, as it will have logged a fault code.

If you get ABS or TC fault on start up it can be a low battery problem or a bad connection to one of the sensors if the battery is spinning the engine well. You need someone near you with a Nanocom look on the LZ map. Looked no one in that area with what you need.
