I have a Freelander L314 TD4 from November 2001.
Suddenly this February it start to fail 1 in 8 times +/- on starting the starter engine. Tried battery but was useless, old battery is fine and the new one too.
It happens anytime during the day, it happened at 2ºC but now also at 27ºC.
I turn the key, wait for checkup, all fine, but when I turn to starter position the radio fades, lights keep the same brightness, and the start engine does not start, nor the solenoid push is eared.
Any ideas?

If there is no click noise when you try to start it then remove, clean and tighten the small lucas connector on the starter motor.

If there is a click engine and does not turn over then you need to fit new solenoid contacts in the starter motor. Not a difficult job.

Possible that the switch is faulty but check the terminal first. It is in the dirt!!

Also, connect lamp or voltmeter to it and check it gets supply voltage when cranking. That tests the switch without taking anything apart.

Check starter relay is okay, as said check all wiring do you have to press clutch is an extra relay for safety sorry don't know if is an auto had similar problem was starter relay started 50/50 when turning key
