A sad day is about to come...

So, the day has finally come when my faithful old D2 has to go.
I've had a change of office that means a 100 mile commute each day and i don't think a Discovery 2 is the vehicle for the job.

Back to boring car reality in the shape of Mrs Almighty's A4 estate

Any idea when the best time to sell it is?
I was thinking Now but it'll be sods law that it snows all winter and i'll have nothing to play in.

I would have said best time to sell it is normally around 9.47 am on the third Thursday of each month. Planetary alignment is key, Venus needs to be aligned with Saturn..

Now's probably as good a time as any.

But... bollocks to a hundred mile round trip each day. That's a serious chunk of life spent commuting.

How much you want usually helps to sell it.

100miles a day isn't good, i agree... hopefully just a temporary measure until we can move house.

Bloke at the independent specialist that looks after the car reckons i should get good money for it, its waxoyled and had all services etc.

It's part of the family though, the kids love it and it did us proud on a 1300 mile journey to the South of France back in May... like i said, a sad day.

Then don't get rid of it, I commute about 90miles a day to my job and the disco does fine

Hi Jim, do you think when you've moved you will want a D2 again?

If you do, try to put a monetary value on this temporary 100 commuting and compare it with selling and re-buying.

Don't worry about fuel costs, be concerned much more about how much you would get for yours right now and how much you will need to pay in the future, for a replacement.

Then set aside say a grand, for additional fuel costs for the interim.

If you keep your current DII it WILL be cheaper overall.

A few years ago I worked for a large global corporation (until the b'stards made me redundant..) and we had a chap who commuted to Cambridge from Oxford each day in a Ferrari, his philosophy was if I'm going to sit driving for four hours a day I might as well enjoy it!

Of course he enjoyed it more so on his six figure salary...but you get my drift

Take it off the road buy a diesel fiesta drive that until you move then get disco out the garage in a few months time.
I use to drive a 2 stroke learner legal 89 miles a day all throughh winter and it did it so a d2 will **** it

I do a 70 mile round trip commute and have just got a manual Disco1 as it is better mpg than my Toyota Landcruiser! You can guarantee if you sell itnext week it will snow and the week after you will sell your house!

I agree, that's 50miles each way, why is it not the vehicle for it? Ok granted its not the best on fuel, but its by no means bad, you sit higher up, so if you see you are approaching traffic, you can turn off the motorway earlier, saves you time in the long run

I got rid of my disco because my weekly mileage was due going up, (admittedly not quite as much as the OP's), and the car I replaced it with ended up giving me about 22MPG, and now I'm borrowing my Mother's fiesta which returns around 30MPG, the same as what my disco did. Hence why I'm now buying another discovery.

The same fuel economy, as a normal car, but in a much bigger car, that works in all weathers, is fun to drive, and alot more comfortable than a modern eco-box.

Keep your disco!

I did a 150 mile trip in our D1 last week.
I thought it was quite comfortable. I didn't get out of it feeling as fresh and relaxed as I did when I used to have a Jaguar XJ40, granted, but it was about 9/10ths the way there and the visability on the motorway was excellent. Far superior to a saloon, estate or one of those dreary little hatchbacks.

You mentioned fuel economy as an issue, so the presumption is you have a Diesel model anyway. I gather they are quite frugal for their size around town anyway which will only improve on a long cruise?
You also state that the lengthly commute is only a temporary situation? If this is the case and you're happy with what you have, stick with the devil you know rather than an unknown vehicle of unknown reliability and unknown personal tollerance levels.

Service all your fluids and renew the brakes and carry on as you are for now. Unless of course you actually fancy a change in which case rock on.

Cheers for all the advice guy's, i am having a good hard think at the moment and will mull over it at the weekend.

Sadly, Mrs Almighty isnt so keen on driving the DII if she has to park it... otherwise that would be the best solution.
