A really annoying whine

Another one for you esteemed Rangie gurus.

My lovely motor has recently developed a high-pitched whine, but it’s of an annoyingly intermittent nature. It appears to be coming from the OSF wheel, and it doesn’t occur until I’ve driven a few miles. Even then, it'll happen for anything up to 15/20 seconds, then it'll stop.

During the week, my blue beauty is only driven around 10 miles a day between home and the train station, so the whining noise only gets to happen when I give it a decent run over the weekend.

I did originally think that maybe it was maybe a sticking brake caliper, but it often occurs when I haven’t even applied the brakes for a while, so I’ve discounted that theory.

Any ideas, folks?

Cheers Keith.

What's the best way of confirming whether a wheel bearing is on it's way out (other than driving around with it squealing it's arse off)?
Don't know on the P38 with it's live axle, never had the problem yet. Easy on the Transit, with the wheel and caliper off, I could feel the roughness when I turned it. Didn't really need to check as it was obviously the bearing, the noise increased when that wheel was loaded in the turn.
