I've recently got a 2001 Series II Discovery, it's had a light upgrade and i'm not sure if the wiring has been done correctly

The dipped beam is Xenon and the main beam is Halogen, now when the main beam is engaged the dipped lights go out, apart from the visual change from bright white to a yellow glow which is annoying, are they doing what they are suppose to do or do I need to get them rewired

Ta chaps :)

It depends on what headlights are fitted and who fitted them.

If you have factory fitted facelift headlights then the dipped lights should be on whenever headlights are required with the main beams being switched off or on in addition.

If they were fitted aftermarket by a previous owner with no modification to the wiring then in all likelihood they will work as the older headlights with the twin filament bulbs would; either main beam or dipped beam.

You could always change the bulbs for the same type, in the case of the facelift units, they're H7 for both main and dipped beam which you can get as Xenon bulbs. I use Xenon "nightbreakers" in mine.

It'll be the aftermarket one then, the previous owner said the guy he got it from upgraded the headlights from a later version Discovery, I did notice what looked like aftermarket ballast packs just behind the headlights.

Would it be an easy/cost effective job to upgrade to hi/lo xenon and get the necessary bits rewired to have both dipped and main beams on or would I need to buy a new Xenon hi/lo conversion kit?

Sounds like HID's to me, your headlamps are h4 fitment, the cheaper HID's are only xenon on dipped beam and halogen on high beam, my vw polo was like this, so was my honda civic and so was my vw golf, and so will be disco if i get round to buying them. You can spend a bit more money on the hi & low beam HID's but they a bit more pricey.

Yes they are HID's , just had another look, sods law that I had a set of H4 hi/lo HID's that I had sat on the shelf for over 4 years - cost me £150 and never finished my Cav GSi rebuild so sold them a couple of weeks ago.

Might leave them be, just noticed the nearside indicator lights up when the lights go on full beam so i'll need to have them out at some point
