I haven't been on the road for a while, don't have a circuit tester, don't even have a workshop manual yet so forgive my rather base approach...
I took the switch out and as someone had predicted, the earth spade had come loose so it had got hot and had slightly melted the wiring cluster/socket that fits on the rear of the switch. I dismantled the switch and gave the locating rivet a few taps which seemed to sort it but I will replace when I get another anyway. When reassembled it does the same thing, still pops fuses - even when I took an earth from the switch to the original earth wire a few inches back from the switch bypassing the 'heat treated' spade connection. I suspect there is another problem as there is a noise like a very faint thud from the depths of the bulkhead when the switch is operated, so power is fleetingly getting somewhere, then the fuse pops.
An ideas?
